Ärende: good news after bad 341

Talked to them on the phone today - they sound quite
happy with this turn of events, though next Monday is
the appointment to discuss whether surgery is needed.
The tumor, though benign, still managed to grow to the
size of a Reese's cup in under 3 months. In the case of
tumors, benign means "not malignant," but under some
circumstances, when not treated or when in an inconvenient
location, they can still kill you: a cellist friend of
mine lost a son to a "benign" tumor in the brain (he did
live a good decade with it, though). In this case, it
looks like an operation would be feasible if needed.

The underlying cancer, signet cell adenocarcinoma, is
still there, but we're hoping that radiation plus a
chemo cocktail quite similar to what my sister was
originally on may keep it at bay or even knock it out.

Caramel sauce
cat: sauce
yield: 1 batch

1 part caramel syrup
2 parts cream
salt

Combine and stir well.

Note: Caramel syrup is made by melting sugar, diluting with water,
and cooking until thickened.

Caramel sauce II
cat: sauce
yield: 1 batch

250 g sugar
80 mL cream
3 mL vanilla

In a heavy skillet melt the sugar over low heat, allowing
it to color slightly.

In another saucepan heat the cream to just below a boil.

Carefully stir the cream into the sugar.

Cook, stirring constantly, until smooth.

Remove the sauce from heat and add the vanilla.

Keep hot in a double boiler until ready to use.
