-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> Took an hour and change on the interstate to get back to AVP
GJ> Was that one of the much maligned interstate buses?
ML> It was not, as you might have noted had you read the first
ML> part of the post. Not that I didn't try - I would have
ML> happily spared my friend the effort had there actually been
ML> a public bus. You will realize, of course, that though the
ML> road was the interstate, the journey was not.
GJ> I didn't quite understand the phrase, "change on the interstate"

ML> You didn't bear in mind the early part of the report - or
ML> if you did, must have imagined that Annie was taking a
ML> bus with me. As far as interstate buses go, there's not a
ML> distinction here between interstate and intrastate ones.

GJ> took that to mean you changed interstate buses. What, in fact, did
GJ> you change on that interstate road?

ML> Read the sentence again, preferably out loud.
ML> I didn't say "took an hour and one change," for example.

I did that, and my next interpretation was that you changed your
costume while being driven along the road. Then, after much heavy
thinking I remembered that you have roads where you have to pay coins
to drive a car on them, so I finally realised that you were referring
to the small change you paid to travel on the "interstate". (Phew!)

GJ> I have heard of puddings simulating plastic explosive, or vice versa,
GJ> but not sausages. In any case, if the people with X-ray vision were
GJ> suspicious all you had to do would be to unwrap your parcels.

ML> That's all one ever has to do. The TSA, though stupid, wasteful,
ML> and constitutionally dubious, is seldom malignant. By the way,
ML> the sausages were frozen, which would render them more dangerous
ML> in reality as well as in appearance (their density decreasing
ML> somewhat owing to this condition).

Likewise my camel snags and steaks were kept frozen from Darwin to home
by many layers of the NT News. A very effective insulator.

ML> There's that problem with all altimeters that are pressure based.
GJ> I believe that radar altimeters are used on some aircraft,
GJ> particularly at low altitudes as when landing, when high accuracy is
 GJ> needed.

ML> The question is why aren't they used on all aircraft? The
ML> current system, relying on atmospheric pressure readings
ML> called in by the control tower, seems a bit dodgy.

They are basically the same design as the ones used on the Tiger Moth,
requiring to be set to zero at ground level before take-off, or to
local barometric pressure at the destination before landing. There
must be some reason for their retention, apart from their independence
from electrical supply malfunctions.

I notice with amusement that I have the following recipe entered in my
MM database twice. The other entry is identical apart from the
"chilli" spelling used throughout - and being submitted by Dirty
instead of Burty. Both version give the same MLoo originator, you will
be pleased to know.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Chili Appreciation Society International Chili
 Categories: Loo, Chili
      Yield: 1 Batch

2 lb Chuck beef, cubed in
           -stew-sized pieces
      1 md Onion, chopped
2 tb Chopped suet or veg. oil
      4 Jalapenos, stemmed,
           -seeded, halved
      8 oz Tomato sauce
     12 oz Beer
     16 oz Beef stock
      1 tb Cumin, ground
      2 ts Garlic powder
      1 ts Pepper, ground
      4 tb Chili powder
    1/4 c Masa
      1 c Water
      1 tb Paprika

The only way I do beer chili is make a regular pot, extra hot, and
drink a bunch of beers with it. Very satisfactory that way.

Let it be noted that I disagree with many of the particulars of the
recipe below, but it's a good example of a beer chili.

Brown beef and onion in fat. Add peppers, tomato, beer, stock, cumin,
garlic, pepper, and half the chili powder. Simmer until meat is done,
about 2 hr. Make a paste of the masa and water. Stir this quickly
into the chili. Add the paprika and the rest of the chili powder.
Cook 15 min. Remove Jalapenos and serve.
