BS> Not being a commercial pilot or anything...when you do an approach to
BS> anywhere important, you listen in on a set (published) frequency and
BS> catchup on the latest gossip about what's happening, strictly listen
BS> only. You may have heard
BS> this on that inflight radio, some airlines provide to the cabin, as

I think United in particular, on Channel 9, as recommended by MLoo.

 BS> the copilot
BS> reports to the tower/approach that they're inbound with "Golf" or some
BS> other phonetic letter. Part of "Golf" is the current altimeter setting
BS> for the airport, in good old inches of mercury for you metric people,

I thought they used millimetres of mercury these days. Or perhaps in
USA, millimeters.

BS> wind speed/direction (in degrees and knots), temperature (fahrenheit

"Knots"? I thought that air-ships used miles per hour these days.
Certainly the last time I flew with an instrument panel in front of me
(2007, in a Tiger Moth), the speed was indicated in Miles per Hour,
the altitude in feet, and the engine speed in RPM.

BS> thank you very much) and interesting tidbits like a run/taxiway being
BS> out of service or other inconsequential things which could wreck a
BS> perfectly beautiful flight. The flight crew, copilot, inputs that

Like the control tower keeping the plane waiting for take-off for a
half hour or so.

BS> barometric pressure manually into the altimeter. The reports I saw
BS> indicated that there'd been a reported problem, twice IIRC, with the
BS> altimeter giving the autopilot false information. I can't
BS> recall if those guys have two altimeters or not. If so, why did it
BS> react of different reportings...should've screeched like Hell and done

I would expect that something as important as an altimeter would be at
the very least duplicated, with different sensor inputs for each unit.

Sometimes the pilots think they can do better than the automatics, and
crash, like the new Airbus which crashed while being demonstrated a
few years ago in France. Sometimes the pilots really can do better,
as when landing on the Hudson River.

Title: Shepherds' Thighs With Fresh Rosemary
 Categories: Fix me
      Yield: 4 servings

           Lamb cutlets; extra trim or
           -French cut
      1 Bottle mustard, honey and
           -herb marinade
           Sprigs fresh rosemary

This is our family name for mouth-watering lamb cutlets, so called
because, when artistically designed on a plate, they resemble a pair
of legs. Served with a huge green salad and crusty French bread,
they're perfect for Sunday lunch, a summer evening at home, or a
barbeque. Children Iove them, so you always need more than you think
(yes, the lamb - you're such a card!).

Method: Baste cutlets on both sides with some of the marinade and
grill or barbeque until meat is just pink in the middle. This cut of
meat is very tender, so there is no need to marinade for any length
  of time.

Presentation: Arrange cutlets on a serving dish and garnish with
  sprigs of fresh rosemary.
