Ärende: travels 380
===================
ML> I never found a room there for under $300 a night, and
 ML> that's US dollars.

Just pointing out that current rates are somewhat lower,
as the travel industry struggles. But when I wanted to go,
300-450 was the norm - very rich for my pocketbook.

GJ> On one occasion I stayed at a hotel near Orchard Rd, but that was on a
 GJ> package trip from Manila.

Back in pre-Kwan Yew days when I was even
GJ> tighter with my money than I am now, I stayed at the sort of place
GJ> that only had a communal Asian style toilet, and table-cloths on the
 GJ> bed instead of sheet.

I've stayed in some extremely stripped-down places, not many,
but I'm unlikely to do so in future, as I tend to lug my
identity, er, laptop computer with me wherever I go. An extra
$25 a night is good insurance. I also don't like squat toilets
and tend to hold it for days and days and days when traveling
in areas where they are the only available.

ML> That will surely not happen anytime soon, because it is
ML> about time for the older highrises to be razed in favor
ML> of ones that won't collapse in case of an earthquake.
GJ> I don't think Singapore has a history of earthquakes.

Everyplace will find an earthquake sooner or later. Singapore,
being outside an active zone, is less likely to experience one,
but the taller the building the more displacement from even a
small shock. The Singapore government actually has a system
for earthquake monitoring, and I doubt it was established just
as a porkbarrel project.

   It could be
GJ> affected a bit from Java quakes, however.

I think that's a major issue.

GJ> The new MRT circle line has been taking ages to construct, rather like

It's not a perfect country, even setting aside human rights
and individual freedom issues. The circle line, supposedly
meant to open about 2-3 years ago, is in limbo since the
Nicoll Highway and Holland Road collapses (the latter was not
publicized outside the region, as there were no fatalities).

GJ> the open cut Boston metro line. Is that finished yet?

What open cut Boston metro line?

ML> We have passed up the Peranakan Museum in favor of spending
ML> the money on nyonya food. Though the city museum of Penang,
GJ> What they need is a Peranakan museum restaurant.

The closest thing, according to my friend Willem, who lives
in Singapore, is the Rendezvous Restaurant in the hotel of
the same name.

GJ> It is a long time since I was on Pulao Penang. Maybe time to return
GJ> and inspect the new bridge across to the island.

It remains the most heralded tourist attraction of the region,
despite being some 20 years old. I looked at it and thought
to myself, gee, a bridge. It might have been more interesting
to see from the Menara Komtar, but that was closed the day I
was willing to plunk down my dollar or two. Next time perhaps
I'll try to see it from the tower and the ferry.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Dave Sacerdote <=-

 DS> Why is that embarrassing?
 GJ> a. I don't like to clap along with a lot of people I don't know, and
GJ> rock sideways in my seat, looking happy (at least when sober).

Agreed. So I don't do it and avoid the near occasion of doing it.

GJ> b. I resent being urged to do things against my nature, just because
GJ> "everyone else" is doing it.

Agreed. I actually even resent being urged to do things that
are in accord with my nature.

GJ> c. As many of the passengers probably feel as I do, I am embarrassed
 GJ> for them.

Well, that's their problem. Let them be embarrassed for themselves.
If lots of people just say no, maybe the silliness will stop.

 GJ> d. I don't like rap singing.

Agreed.

GJ> e. I don't understand what the FA is saying, anyway.

That's because they speak some kind of weird teenage
dialect, as opposed to some kind of weird Ozstrine.

GJ> f. All I want is a peaceful flight, undisturbed by intrusive
GJ> behaviour by FAs or other passengers.

And Courvoisier.

GJ> It was bad enough when I had to listen to the FA sing the Company Song
GJ> at the end of a flight before being allowed to alight, without having
GJ> to sit through that sort of performance at the beginning.

Agreed.
