====================
ML> 300-450 was the norm - very rich for my pocketbook.
GJ> For me, that is in the stratosphere! Or even the Van Allen belt.

I've never paid more than half that, and 25% is more my
comfort level (still high for most folks).

GJ> The last time I stayed in one of those places I left my larger luggage
GJ> with the elderly Chinese lady concierge, who spoke no English, while I
GJ> disappeared Northward to Malaysia and Thailand for 2 weeks. It was
GJ> well looked after, and ready for me to collect when I returned and
GJ> signed her book. No charge. I found that those Chinese-run hotels
GJ> were quite safe, and scrupulously honest.

I am not so trusting. It takes one exception, and the
likelihood that the thief will be apprehended in short order
and flogged within an inch of his life won't make the result
any better.

GJ> Singapore is in a good position to monitor surrounding earthquakes,
GJ> without becoming too directly involved.

The government Website indicates that that is one of the
functions, the other being to ensure a quick response in
the unlikely event.

ML> What open cut Boston metro line?
GJ> The last time I was in Boston, I remember seeing an extension of the
GJ> subway which was being built using the open cut then fill method. At
GJ> least that was what I was told that large hole in the ground was.

If you mean the Red Line extension, that was back in the '80s
I think. The Orange Line rerouting took it above ground, and
the Green Line reconstruction in the mid '00s merely moved the
mouth of the tunnel north a few blocks.

GJ> f. All I want is a peaceful flight, undisturbed by intrusive
GJ> behaviour by FAs or other passengers.
 ML> And Courvoisier.
GJ> Or a reasonable red - or two - or three.

One doesn't get "reasonable" wine on any US carrier
these days. But at least the mediocrity is not confined
to domestic product - last few tries at United First,
I found the red to be the selfsame DeBortoli Shiraz that
you get by the boxful for single digit dollars.

ML> I believe, a tenet of elementary computing 101 that
ML> such errors as divide-by-zero or result-out-of-domain are
ML> handled promptly by a fixed routine.
 GJ> So, blame the programmers.

If that's where the problem lay. Of course, it's kind of
interesting that this issue didn't come up before.

Question ... is Schiphol lower than sea level, and if so,
would that have made a difference?

GJ> I have noticed that aspect of aircraft accident investigations.
GJ> Sometimes there has been conflict between the findings of the aircraft
GJ> manufacturers and those of the airline or country where the accident
GJ> took place, with each trying to lay the blame on the other.

Hardly a big surprise.

ML> Every time, by hand. This was more effective when I was
ML> spending more time lifting violin bows professionally and
ML> was calibrated to within 0.5 g in the range of 50 to 70
ML> grams, somewhat less accurate outside that range, but
ML> hefting a package to see if its apparent and claimed
ML> weights are compatible is still a routine for me.
GJ> Hmmm. Better than 1%. My hands are not calibrated that accurately.
GJ> Plus or minus 20% accuracy is about the best I can achieve.

I spake too soon. I guessed one bow at the convention and was
off by 1.5 grams. The purveyor, reacting to my intense chagrin,
did point out that my inaccuracy may have been contributed to by
the unusual balance of the bow toward the tip.

GJ> Yesterday there was an affray at Sydney airport, with a fight between
GJ> bikey gangs and a man was bashed to death. Other passengers were
GJ> quite upset. That is more the sort of behaviour I would have expected
GJ> at Port Moresby's Jackson Airport.

I'm glad it was Sydney rather than elsewhere - Sydney is one
of the most horrible places I have ever encountered.
