Depends on the place and how much you've got to spend.  I tend to tip
fairly heavy-minimum 20% if good service.  I've paid a 30% tip for
exceptional service from a place that was extremely busy yet they were
able to listen and correctly make my meal to my order.  If it's really
good, I'll stop by and tell the manager too.

Being a good tipper, instead of a cheapass, has gotten me consistently
good service in the places I frequent around town and at times, a seat
when there was not one to be had.  I have been a waiter before and
know how it works.

I don't know if you know or not, but in the US, a waiter/waitress can
only be paid $2.13 an hour and the rest of their wage is made up in
tips.  Since I make a bit more than I used to, I like to tip more
too.  And the times I can't tip, a kind word does wonders.

I recently went to Folks' (it's a regional "southern style cooking"
joint - GA Ruth knows what I'm talking about, I'm sure).  It wasn't
too busy and we were seated immediately.  The waitress came up and
said, "I remember you!" with a smile.  Being that I have the
short-term memory of a goldfish, I asked "How do you remember us?" (I
was with Maura).

She said with a big smile, "You were very nice to me."

I guess that says something right there...I just treated her like a
peer instead of some peon...and I also tip well there as the service
and food are good.

But, unfortunately, I'm in the minority I hear...most people are
arrogant, impatient and outright rude and bad tippers.

I had some terrible service once and I tipped the waitress two
pennies-a sign of bad service and an insult on top.  I've done that
once in my life and thankfully I've never had to do that again!
