By the way, it did turn out to be a Mar 30 joke, but given the
response, the company is thinking of making the product for
real. From the baconsalt website:

 "If this is a joke, please consider making it for real. I
 personally vow to purchase enough to make the development
 and production costs worthwhile."

I thought I'd read something about nobility doing so, but the
only citation I can come up with is Wiley Post, who wrote some
scandal-mongering tome skewering all sorts of people, building a
conglomeration (not unlike modern-day Internet scandal-mongering)
of verifiable history, unverifiable rumor, and cool stuff out of
his head, and whose testimony is not necessarily more reliable
than that of, say, Wile E. Coyote; he wrote that Queen Victoria
used her napkin as a bib. It is true, though, that a certain
segment of the population, and not necessarily the lowest, has
used napkin clips and napkin chains to bibify its linen.

 When the napkin first came into use, it was handled quite
 differently from the present custom. For a time it was considered
 the thing to throw it over the shoulder then it was placed upon
 the left arm, as it is now carried quite generally by waiters ;
 being still later placed under the chin by one corner, while the
 lateral corners were carried around the body and tied at the back.
 This was the custom during the days of elaborately frilled shirt
 fronts, and the philosophy of the fashion is quite apparent. More
 recently it dropped into the lap, where it still reposes, though
 many individuals have habits of their own to which tenacious
 adherence is given, regardless of the usages of society.

I can't figure that one out. Of course, one of the first times
I encountered this visual metaphor as a young child, it had
been elaborated or perverted by the image of the wearer peeing
out a knothole.

Bacon-infused Bourbon
cat: airline, booze
servings: 12

1 1/4 oz bacon fat
750 mL Four Roses Yellow Label

Melt fat over low heat, stirring until fully liquid
and then for 3 min more. Pour into a large container;
stir in Bourbon. Cover and let stand 4 hr, then freeze
for 2 hr. Scoop solidified fat off the top and "strain
the bourbon twice through cheesecloth or a cotton shirt."
