=================
 DS> Alliteratively, I consider proper poaching to be the pinnacle
 DS> of preparation, producing practically perfect eggs.

I've discovered that my formerly cast-iron tum is becoming
increasingly flummoxed by simple things. Latest in my
dairy bugaboo is eggs (which of course contain no lactose).
The things give me almost as bad runs as milk, and the
faaaalatulence is much worse (thank you, sulfur).

Shortly before that discovery I discovered that I liked
eggs nuked for about 40 sec, especially the yolks. This
when I had less than 5 minutes for lunch before I had
to be someplace ...

 -> Having heard about our economic troubles, the
 -> un-named European gave Mullen this recipe to share
 -> with his readers. I am sure that Mullen would
 -> agree that this recipe should be shared with all.

Sometimes I hate that Internet thing, you know?
Stupid, stupid article.

 -> "It must be hard to buy food without any money.
 -> I have a good way to stretch a Euro.  It's called
 -> Catfood Helper. It was something my mother used
 -> to make after the war.

An Americocentric article, with US-based assumptions,
total disregard for real Europe or real history, and
that kind of flip "I made it up, therefore it's true"
aspect that I just hate here and elsewhere.

 -> "Here it is:
 -> 1 can cat food

1. Cat food wasn't common in the US right after the war,
much less in Europe, where it's still not the norm, and
where during the time of the putative origin of this recipe
"cat food" might well have had a quite different meaning.

Cats, both stray and pet, ate rodents and stuff, and if
they were lucky, they got table scraps and the occasional
saucer of milk (which, by the way, is not very good for them).

 -> 1 pound egg noodles

2. The poor would have made their own noodles.

 -> 1 cup milk
 -> 1 pound cheese, grated.

3. The poor would I think have skimped on these
ingredients rather than glutted on them. This looks
as if it had been written by someone who grew up
with the Amazing Government Cheese Giveaway.

 -> Boil the noodles. Crumble the cat food and brown,
 -> then slowly add the milk and cheese while stirring.
 -> Drain noodles, return to pot, mix in meat sauce.

4. Cat food, except for fish-flavored cat food, isn't
all that bad. And 3 (or even 6) oz of ground-up by-products
would be a relatively insignificant influence on 16 oz of
cheese.

 -> Salt and pepper to taste. Serves 12 to 20.
 -> Because, believe me, no one eats too much."

5. Pepper would have been rather costly, as well.

 DS> Take any given price of any given weight of cat food and
 DS> I can buy a larger amount of pork trimmings or hamburger
 DS> for the same amount of coin.

Truth, though dry food may be more cost-effective.

 DS> Kinda ruins the joke, I guess, but that old poor-people-
 DS> eating-pet-food thing is mostly an urban legend anyway.
 DS> Pet food has always been more expensive than the cheapest
 DS> people food.

Pet food was invented to sell off offal for real money. I
believe you're right in saying that it always was more costly
than the cheapest real people food, and now that it's more
balanced and researched and that sort of Science Diety stuff,
it's downright ridiculous.

By the way, I just yesterday tried kitty snacks made out of
chicken. The damn critters are totally avid for this stuff, so
I popped one in my mouth to try - taste was equal cardboard,
white meat chicken, and polystyrene. The product goes for a
princely $12.99 for 4 oz. Even though it is freeze-dried, and
in fact it's the equivalent of probably 10-12 oz of real
chicken, that's a bunch of dough.
