=====================
Hi Michael,

RH> But, my appetite is no longer what it was and half of a 12"
RH> pizza, (calzone in this case) with salad on the side was a bit too much

ML> I've discovered that for protein foods my appetite is as
ML> big as ever or bigger; for other things, it is fairly modest.

I've cut down across the board, probably the most on proteins and carbs.
OTOH, I've tried to increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables I eat.

ML> Self-preservation, perhaps, as my blood sugar tends to be on
 ML> the high side.

Eating more veggies? So far my blood sugar levels have been good but I
know I should keep an eye on it. My mom is diabetic but doesn't watch
what she eats as much as she should. She and Dad still like the carbs
and meats, followed by sweets, a bit too much.

ML> Good sized (or perhaps more properly, well sized) means sensibly
 ML> sized (of appropriate size).
RH> Agreed, that should be the proper useage.
ML> Good-sized (or, more classically, good-size) means big.
RH> That's the more idiomatic use that seems to have taken over.

ML> When I learned English as she is spoke, these distinctions
 ML> were followed.

I did too but it seems to not be taught in the schools any more. Text
messaging has seriously contributed to the decline as well.

RH> I used to be able to eat half of a 16" round

ML> That is a respectable quantity of food indeed.

Yes but my metabolism was higher then. Those pizzas were made from hot
roll mix (something Steve taught me) which was all white flour, not as
filling as whole wheat. Once I changed to making my own pizza dough out
of whole wheat flour, the amount of pizza I consumed started declining.

RH> Actually, I'd go for either a diet Coke or sweet tea as my drink of
 RH> choice.
ML> The place has the former, not the latter, which is not
 ML> common hereabouts.
RH> I know; you only find sweet tea in the south. Even in Texas they
RH> serve it unsweet. That took me by surprise when we moved there; I was
RH> expecting the sweet tea of the south eastern states.

ML> You should have known - Texans have good teeth.

ML> "How can you tell that the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas?
ML> 'cause otherwise it would be called a teethbrush."

That one is so old that I'm surprised it has any teeth left. (G)
