I know.  I've been there (g), but did not see any monkeys, so I
wondered.  Still wondering, are they recent migrants from further
south, or did they come along with North America when it parted from
Europe?  As your possums apparently migrated from the South, the
monkeys could have, also.

Life was good in those days!  Trained monkeys to pick your fresh
durians, and no snow shovels.

Some years ago, in NZ, I discovered Watties Chilli Beans (Hot), in
cans.  Quite wonderful on toast for breakfast, with moderate heat and
nicely balanced spicing.  Unfortunately they are considered too
dangerous for Australians, so I can't get them here. Looking around
for a local substitute in Taliban Traders, I came across a can of fava
beans with chilli, made by Harvest Foods, of 6th of October City,
Egypt, labelled "Foul with Hot Pepper" in English and Arabic.  I have
now tried it, and report that that description is incorrect in that
there is very little heat in the Pepper.  The flavour is weak, and the
texture tough.  Not recommended.  I shall continue with my search...

      Title: Red Beans and Rice [Jamaica]
 Categories: Vegetables, Grains
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
MMMMM------------------------COCONUT MILK-----------------------------
      1 sm Coconut
      4 c  Water

MMMMM-----------------------RICE AND BEANS----------------------------
      1 cn Red beans
      1 md Onion
      1 bn Green onions
      1 tb Dried thyme leaves
      8    Grains allspice or
      1 ts Ground allspice
      2    Or 3 garlic cloves; minced
      1 ts Salt
      2 lb Rice
           ;Water
 
  Take coconut out of shell and process or grate it in the water, then
  squeeze it through double-layered cheesecloth.  Use only the liquid;
  throw gratings away. It works better if you let it sit for an hour or
  so before sieving.
  
  Cook the beans in the coconut milk for one hour (simmering).  Chop
  onion and scallions and add with thyme, allspice, garlic, 1 tsp salt
  and 2 lbs rice. Add water to cover + one inch over top of rice and
  beans mixture. (use 1st knuckle to guess). Bring to a boil, turn down
  heat and simmer, covered, 40 minutes or until rice is done.
