My grandfather had a longish (12' or so) tough made of full dimension, rough
sawn white oak. We'd pile the big green/brown walnuts into the trough and then
he would drive the pickup back and forth in the trough a few times ... much the
same as your cement mixer in effect.

We had a LOT of walnut trees. Also shag-bark hickory and oaks to keep the tree
rats occupied. BTW - the trough method also worked on the hickory nuts.

Walnut stain is nearly as good as aniline dye for cloth ... if you want a dark
brown colour. It also works for wood very nicely.

We didn't have walnuts near the house. Shade was handled by BIG, old maple and
oak trees. The main maple tree was big enough that when I was 12, my sister 10
and my younger brother 7 we could not reach all the way around it by joining
hands. That tree still stands in the SW corner of the farmstead yard, providing
afternoon shade ... and lots of leaves for composting.

      Title: Black Walnut Oatmeal Pie
 Categories: Amish, Pies, Ceideburg, Nuts
      Yield: 6 servings
 
      3    Eggs; lightly beaten
      1 c  Brown sugar; packed
    1/2 c  Dark corn syrup
    1/2 c  Evaporated milk
    1/2 c  Quick-cooking rolled oats
    1/2 c  Coarse chopped black walnuts
    1/4 c  Butter; melted
      1 ts Vanilla
           Salt
           Unbaked pastry for single
           - crust pie
 
  Here's another Amish recipe for all the masochists who enjoy shelling
  Black Walnuts.
  
  In large mixing bowl, combine eggs, sugar, syrup, milk, oats, nuts,
  butter, vanilla and 1/8 teaspoon salt, mixing well.
  
  Line 9-inch pie plate with pastry, trim and flute edge.  Place plate
  on oven rack and pour in filling.  Protect edge of pie with foil to
  prevent over browning.  Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.  Remove foil.
  Bake for about 25 minutes more or until top is deep golden brown and
  slightly puffy. Filling with be slightly soft, but will firm up as it
  cools.
  
  Cool completely.
  
  Makes 1 pie.
