You'd think they'd have more of a self-preservation urge...  ;)  Ours
seem to trust us to somehow manage to avoid them even if we CAN'T see
them...  Like my cat that positions herself such that you can't see any
of the white in her fur, just the dark grey, in a narrow passage without
much light, that I'm going to have to walk through... or the paw or tail
stuck out into that same passageway, oblivious to the fact that it could
be in mortal danger.  MANY the Rwoowwwwrrrr that is our first clue.  (G)  
Surprisingly, though, we do avoid more often than not... :)

Wife abuse, obviously... (G)  Black labs in the middle of the night and
parking lot ice are deadly, though... :)  I've had my own experience
with the latter, with worse results than your wife's...  I did a real
number on my ankle and was essentially bedbound for 10 weeks...  it was
totally non-weightbearing for that long, and I had to hop on the other
leg to get anywhere, using a walker.  Neither leg has forgiven me yet,
either, and it was over 5 years ago now... :)
