====================
 Hi, Dave,

CS> Yeah, I had one of those as a kid. Not really a good bike. I know
CS> what you mean about 'english bikes' and they are the best. The ones I
CS> do not like, are the ones where the handles 'curl under'. They have a
CS> purpose in that you can use the top part for lights and other gear, but
CS> they are just flat out too awkward for me.

DD> The purpose for the reversed curve bars is to force the rider into the
DD> "proper" wind cheating attitude for racing. Of the cycles with 18
DD> gazillion speeds I prefer the "mountain" bike layout with the
DD> flat-across bar that puts one into a slightly bent forward position
DD> with a portion of the rider's weight taken by the wrists. Much more
DD> comfortable than the totally hunched over "racer" thing. Plus, you can
DD> see where you are going.

Pretty much as I said below, and I do enjoy seeing the
areas I tour. If it was JUST an exercise, I suppose I
could make space for a stationary bike I could use
indoors in all weather (but like many, probably wouldn't).
I LIKE getting out and exploring when I can (Winter is
 getting to be a drag!)

JM> I presume those are meant for racing. But all
JM> bikers are not racers, so not all bikes should
JM> be designed for racers! Some of us just want a
JM> pleasant ride around the neighborhood which
JM> gives us some exercise credits.

DD> My preference is for the older Schwinn/Huffy/Monark bicycle with a
DD> maximum of three speeds and balloon tires. But, these days, when I find
DD> one it is listed as a "beach cruiser" and priced at a VERY upscale
DD> price. When last is looked the Murray "beach cruiser" was U$245 at

Only that much? The bike shop I go to for repairs
had a $999 bike for little girls on display! We
 Americans are insane, I suspect!

DD> Target. Just a bit down from it was a Murray 18-speed "mountain" bike
 DD> with the insert-it seat and semi-skinny tires - U$85. Go figure. I'm
DD> waiting to see what shows up on Freecycle or Craig's List.

I watch for garage sales while I am biking about. If I
have to, I can arrange to hike back over and drive the
bike back home. The last one I did manage to get into the
 trunk of my car.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Spinach Balls
 Categories: Snacks
      Yield: 1 Recipe

     20 oz Frozen chopped spinach
    1/4 c Finely chopped onion
2 c Herb seasoned stuffing mix
      1 c Grated parmesan cheese
      5 ea Eggs, beaten
    3/4 c Butter or
           -margarine, softened
      1 ds Garlic salt
      1 ds Onion juice
      1 ds Cayenne pepper
      1 ea Salt to taste

Cook spinach according to package directions and drain well, then
squeeze dry. Combine all ingredients, mixing well. (It's easiest to
use your hands.) Form into 1/2-inch balls and freeze on baking sheets
until firm. Then place in freezer bag to store. To serve, bake frozen
balls 15 minutes at 350 F. Serve with a curry, mustard or cocktail
  sauce.

[J's note: I've tried these and they're pretty good, if greasy. It's
nice to do the fixing at one time and the baking just before the
  party.]

From a newspaper article by Felicia Gressette. Typed for you by Joan
  MacDiarmid.

MMMMM
