 I've spent a few weeks in the Raleigh-Durham area.  
 Nortell had a school.  It was warmer and muggier than I like, 
 but many people love that kind of weather.   Beaches are nice,
 we have several close on the Great Lakes, but the kids don't 
 want to go there and get sand in their shorts, they want to go 
 to the Giant Wave pool ...  Dunno about these modern kids.
  
 
 BG>  Otherwise we are several weeks away here.  My daughter gave
 BG>  me on of those hanging basket things and an upside down tomato
 
 I picked the first one this morning.  It was not quite as rip as 
 I wanted but I'm not taking any chances on the birds beating me 
 to it.   That area where you are is fantastic for fresh veggies.
 I'm happy to have a tomato by August, but now I'm eating fresh 
 corn trucked up from your backyard.   What a wonderful place for 
 a person who loves good food to live.
 
  RH> Our local CVS had them right after we got back from our trip.  We got
 RH> a couple and last week we got a couple of tomato plants (really small)
 RH> to put in one.  Holding the other one for next year so we can start
 RH> earlier.  We figure we'll have some tomatoes before frost hits.  We

 They take a lot more care than they show on the commercials.  
 Because the earth is open at the bottom, all the water drains 
 through quickly, so they need watering daily, even in a rain.
 
 BG>  I did parsley once, that stuff took over the yard.   Watch out
 BG>  it grows faster than grass.

 RH> Ours is confined to a 6" pot; the first seedlings are just beginning
 RH> to poke thru now.  I'll keep it as an indoor plant, harvesting as needs
 RH> be. 
 
 I tried this scheme I saw in a magazine about laying out little 
 plots and planting herbs in their own plot.  HA.. roots run out 
 under the separators, they seed in the breeze.  I have some thyme
 planted in between the bricks on the patio, but winter takes it 
 out, then the seeds seed all over the place next spring.
  
  
 BG>  Some spices grow in window boxes and hang nicely.  I don't know
 BG>  what they are of course, but might find out now.  I have an overhang
 BG>  on the front of my garage and was contemplating putting them there.

 The more I learn about inverted plants, the less enthusiastic 
 I am about them.   Mine are doing OK, but I baby the heck out 
 of them.  The neighbors who put theirs in much earlier have not
 bunches of neat hanging leaves with bright red tomatoes, but 
 more like long stalks of thick tomato bush hanging down with 
 wilted leaves and a very few tiny fruits.
 
 RH> It's really not a lot of work to dry herbs.  We're going basically
 RH> organic with the way we're raising them.  Not knowing how the
 RH> prepackaged dry ones were raised (unless they specify organic) is good
 RH> reason to grow our own.
 
 
 BG>  nice to have fresh all season though.
 
 It doesn't get that cold down where you are, you might have a 
 herb garden year round in a box covered in the winter with 
 clear plastic.

 RH> Definately!  Steve used some of the basil the other day in a
 RH> deconstructed BLT.  He had the B & L on the side of a T and basil
 RH> sandwich.
