==========================
Hi Nancy,

RH> especially after my dad let the girls know he much he hated yogurt

NB> Sometimes you just have to educate them... :) I do pay attention to

My dad was well into his 40s or 50s (I think the latter.) when he first
encountered yogurt. The fact that it was made popular by "hippes'
didn't endear it to him, as well as his being a "stuck in the mud" meat
& potatoes eater.

NB> things that my mom totally avoids for health reasons (whether or not I
NB> agree that they need avoiding). Those I don't feed her. :)

AFAIK, neither of my folks has any health issues whee they have to
totally avoid any food. Mom has diabetes but that doesn't stop her from
eating sweets. They have cut down (somewhat) on fried things but not
entirely eliminated them and they use more salt than they should but
it's hard to convince them otherwise now.

NB> few sessions, NB>> but it really was too much for her, and we ended
NB> up finishing the job NB>> without her. She'd already moved into a
 NB> living-assist place, after a NB>> stroke...

RH> Could you still take things over (or a list, pictures, etc) for her to
 RH> make decisions on?

NB> We tried a few times, but then it was pretty obvious that I had a
NB> pretty good idea of how she'd respond, and it made her tired very
 NB> quickly, so
NB> we just took over, except for the odd thing or two.

I'd like to be able to get together with my siblings and do some before
my folks get to the point where they can't participate in the division
of things. But, since we're scattered from Florida to (currently) NC
(who knows where in a few years) to Arizona to NY (one across the street
from my parents, the other is a couple of hours away)--the chances of
all 5 of us together is usually almost impossible. The last couple
times we've been up, I've seen 2 of my siblings.

RH> decisions on who got what. I got a number of things, mostly from the
RH> kitchen, because my mom spoke up for me--I was getting married within a
RH> few months. I still have/use most of them.

NB> All of Mom's genealogy stuff went to me, by her decree. What that
NB> constituted was occasionally a discussion... there were a few things
NB> that I thought I should keep instead of them being shredded and
NB> tossed... my brother-in-law at one point responded with "genealogists
NB> are CRAZY!", to which I merely quietly agreed with a smile... :)

Good way to get what you wanted. Are you the only genealogy "nut" in
the family? I don't know if any of my siblings have done any
research; I've not done much but my maternal grandfather did (you saw
some of it). I got it becuase I've kept up (somewhat) with the family
still in Germany and Steve has done research on his family.

NB> Otherwise, the two brothers (hubby and bil) decided how to divide
NB> things equitably, and what no one, including the grandchildren, wanted
NB> got sold at an estate sale. We got a little of the kitchen stuff, the
 NB> kids got
NB> more as they were in the process of setting up households.

Makes it nice that kids can have some from their grandmother's kitchen.
My dad's parents passed away in 1949; mom and dad got married in 1950.
All of Dad's siblings were married before him so he and mom got a good
bit of the household stuff. A few years ago, I snagged some cookie
cutters that had been my grandmothers (while at my parent, with my mom's
OK). Some look old enough that we were wondering if my great
grandfather (the one who came over from Germany) had made them for his
wife. Eventually the ones I have will go to Rachel and Deborah. I wanted
to make sure I got them before they disappeared as "junk" (as some of my
siblings would regard them).

Catch you later,
Ruth
