First, a fairly disgusting recipe.

1/2 oz Melon Liqueur
1/2 oz Creme de Bananes
1/5 oz Advocaat

Directions
Layer the creme de banane over the melon liqueur. Then drop the advocaat into
the middle of the creme de banane. The advocaat should hang in the middle if
poured correctly.

So you were 12 or so, and she was 8? What a spunky little creature
she must have been.

How many bullies were there? In junior high, there was a particular
brute named Kevin Dougherty who would kick me in the nuts every day
- he had a coterie of sycophants despite his lack of positive
characteristics, because people liked having their nuts not hurt
every day: one Bobbo Edwards was the worst - he sat behind me in
class and would beat me with a bookstrap when the teachers weren't
looking. But also Charlie Callanan and Chris Ecker (whose father
was mayor of Rockville, MD) and a couple others, who were merely
rude ("stupid chink," that sort of thing, as I was the only nonwhite
in that school except for the highly socialized and well-to-do
Eddie Mazique, whose father had used to date Lena Horne) and not
physically abusive. Well, one day, I decided to pound Kevin, who
squealed to the teacher, and so I got sent up to the headmaster, who
said he had to punish me. So I took my pants down in anticipation
of the belt, which left this guy aghast, as he'd intended me to do
no such thing. He told me to put my pants up, gave me a couple
loud but painless whacks with either a ruler or his hand (I forget
which), and sent me on my way. I believe Kevin fared worse later,
but of course I didn't witness this. He wasn't as bad after that,
but his thugs continued the verbal abuse (and Bobbo kept hitting
me with his bookstrap - he would stretch it out like a slingshot
and let the metal part whap me in the back or the butt or, worse,
the calves, which were relatively uncovered). I was kind of glad
to get out of that place, through no great fault of the teachers.

Funny thing about the chronology; maybe we get our gumption up
around then.

When I was in 9th grade, my sister and I were the only nonwhites
in the school, and we got transferred there several weeks into the
year, so we were doubly or triply stigmatized. My reception at the
school was affected by one peculiar incident, in which one of the
seniors, named Alan Something, started taunting me, and (though I
am generally not a warlike person) I chased him down the hall. He
ducked into the Senior Room, which was sort of a sanctuary for the
12th graders, and I just barrelled in there and confronted him.
Whereupon this little tiny girl named Penny Horton marched up to
me and told me that they had waited 12 (sometimes 13) years for
this privilege, and I should respect that. So she got a reputation
for standing up to the big bad me, and I got a reputation for being
willing to pound anyone any time any place. I wasn't bullied much
in high school, except by the star quarterback, whose obnoxiousness
got me sympathy points with my heartthrob (he fed her a formaldehyde
starfish in bio class, too). I of course was counseled not to beat
up on the star quarterback.

Yes, I believe that, in the micro view, these heroines are doing
the right thing. Yet bullies are often victims of awful family
situations to begin with, and the question remains how to make
them mesh with society. Whapping them about doesn't solve the
big problem of how to keep them from being rage-filled monsters
later on. I wonder what happened to Bobbo Edwards and Kevin
Dougherty afterwards? I sincerely hope that their personalities
served as contraception sufficient that they didn't end up
spreading their nasty genes.
