CS> That it was! It wasnt until she came over, that i realized what was
CS> going on. Keystone kops material in real life.

There had to be some corresponding real life to their material, else no
one would think it funny... it's just a bit over the top for usual...
But it does appear that yours could well have been an episode! (G)

 > CS> I dont recall ever seeing that particular gaijin lady shopping in town
 > CS> again. Her loss! (Gaijin= nonjapanese). Next time i got eels fromthe
 > And she'll likely never achieve "honorary Asian" status, either!
 > Agreed, it's her loss. :)

CS> Yeah, and Sasebo being so much a small community, lack of seeing her
CS> ever again out at Tonoo, was telling. She's one of the ones who
CS> centered in on just the American side. One 'bad experience' ad she
CS> gave up I guess. I feel bad that i was related to that, but it was her
CS> fault for not 'getting back on the horse and learning to ride'.

The experience probably just confirmed what she already believed about
not wanting to get too assimilated... Of course things will be
different in different cultures, not always normal comfort zone, but
that's really the fun of learning new cultures... to expand the comfort
zone... :) Probably takes a certain kind of person to really enjoy the
stretching of different cultures... like you and me... :)

CS> Oh yes! In fact, I shopped there quite regular both before and after.
CS> I'd always check her live vats as she has some of the more interesting
CS> things. Her prices weren't cheap (even by Japan standards) but her
CS> quality more than made up for it.
CS> She was (is i assume) one of the ones with fairly good english so she
CS> could tell you how to cook something that was odd to you. She didnt
CS> always know 'english' name for things but if it wasnt real busy, she'd
CS> put 'number 1 son' on the line and take you to the stall that sold the
CS> thing she meant and show it to you. If busy, she'd write a note and
CS> describe the stall and off you'd go to get it.

I can certainly understand that becoming a regular stop. :) Quality
and good service both... :)

CS> I remember her once saying a word i didnt know at all, but the stall
CS> was the Miso lady. I just grinned and asked if it was a color of miso.
CS> She blinked. Yes, that is how to say it. It is old miso (she meant
CS> aged) and dark and brown. I'm pretty sure thats how she figured out
CS> how to tell me it but it was many years ago now. The Sasebo at least,
CS> name for this dosent use the word 'miso' in the title. Once we knew it
CS> was 'Miso Lady' I just held up a pinky with a question mark on my face
CS> and she held up pinky and 4th but crooked the 4th. She waved her hand
CS> over my purchase as she did this.
CS> We knew what she meant and it was faster by far than trying to say it.
CS> (She meant get 2 balls, but use 1.5 of them for that amount).

Communication across language barriers is so fascinating... :) I've
done similar with an Cuban grandma at church who knows very little
English and speaks less, and my Spanish is likewise rather sparse...
Yet we can communicate more than one would think possible... :)

 > CS> She also sold us the sea squirts (live) that Don and Charlotte

 > CS> That one was so funny, I didnt mind the cleanup.
 >
 > So, was it intentional or not, painting the ceiling...??

CS> Heheh they were having so much fun, they didnt really notice the mess
 CS> until they were done.

(chuckle) I presume not intentional, then... just fun... ;)

 > CS> Take live seacucumber/squirt. Place in sink of water. Grab one and

 > CS> Repeat.
 > CS> Natures own water pistols.... ;-)
 > Certainly fun, in any case... :)
CS> Wonderful fun! If you grab them gently, they hold their load. If you
CS> squeeze a bit, they get scared and spit in defense ;-) A stream can
CS> go 5 ft to 8 ft depending on size of critter.

I can just picture it. :)
