Tsk! So Ford's a bad mind reader too!  You probably should have made it
very, extremely, clear not to come that night.  He's dense.

A-hah, that's why she wanted to have me sit down next to her, have a drink
with her, and give her some food... with me old enough to be her
Grandfather, too!  I thought something funny was going on... especially
given the odd smell your garden flowers seemed to have.

ml-> I do feel sorry that she had a hard time in earlier life, and I
ml-> have given her a little slack because of it, but it's not my
ml-> problem, and if being polite to her (inviting her to the picnic,
ml-> for example) reaps this kind of reward, screw that. 

A common thread in the lives of people with feelings.   Chin up! At least
you are the good guy.

ml-> Burt finally showed up, and I thought I was going to get an excuse
ml-> to escape, or at least a little respite, but no; he picked up his
ml-> stuff, said goodbye, and fled into the dark, and I can't really
ml-> blame him. Before he did, though, he overheard her saying she was
ml-> hungry, and he said, shame be to him, "Michael has a lot of food,
ml-> upstairs."

That's when she got up and started to follow me out to the car and Shirley.
I chickened out and started walking faster, saying I had no food.
She persisted and I said "See Michael tomorrow, he's got food."  I had no
idea of course what she would put you through, and I just wanted to get
away.  I'm sorry for what she did.  But to me it looked like every man for
himself!  If she tweaked my nipple, how would I ever explain it to Shirley?

ml-> Not being content to have run down the upstairs neighbor this
ml-> afternoon, she lit into my friends, calling them nerds and bitches,
ml-> saving special scorn because someone had failed to stuff half a
ml-> dozen of the tomatoes with olives, the bitch.  I lost it and said
ml-> in my most menacing voice, listen to me: if you ever call any of
ml-> my friends a bitch again, I'll rip your head off. 

Good thing I was gone... I would not have been as polite over Shirley as
you were.

ml-> (Oh, one thing. That afternoon, after she left, there had been
ml-> this brief stunned silence followed by nervous or relieved
ml-> laughter followed by a few choice comments ... which I am
ml-> thinking that she heard at least part of. So a little discretion
ml-> - or at least lack of bad timing - can be a good thing.)

Yes, I remember having the feeling that she may have "closed" the door but
still be at the foot of the steps listening.  I think I gave a weak "Shhh"
'cause I wasn't sure.  It was probably already too late.
