 Perhaps he was more familiar with "recreational" drugs?

 My guess is that he had had psychiatric experience - as a patient.

 That all sounds somewhat familiar to me.  (Wait for my book, "Nutters
 I have known")  My take on him is that he is not attempting to con you
 out of anything material.  He derives his satisfaction from conning
 you into believing his self-glorification tales.  Did he say what
 drugs he was on at present, or when he got his tattoo?

 It is interesting how discussion of foods and drinks can give people
 away, as it is very difficult to fake that knowledge in the presence
 of the knowledgeable.  As you have seen, name-dropping is easy, but it
 is impossible to maintain a front as a discussion proceeds.
