It is also something which affects pedestrians.  Here I automatically
look to the right before stepping off the kerb, so when in USA,
Philippines or Europe I have to school myself to look to the left.
Until I realised it, I had some scares on returning to Australia until
I re-adjusted to traffic driving on the left side.

Tonga has always had driving on the right side, but recently there has
been a change in law to drive on the left side, to be the same as New
Zealand, with which the country has a close relationship.  The idea of
that was to encourage the many Tongans who work in NZ to buy cars
there and send them home.  This has resulted in strong protests by the
Tongans, who point out the dangers to pedestrians, and that as most of
the cars in the country are left hand drive, driving them would be
much more dangerous.  Villagers are re-painting the arrows on the
roads showing the direction of traffic to point back the other way.

It is not too difficult in countries which use latin-based languages
and alphabet, as many words have the same derivation as English.
Indonesian and Malay are fairly easy, as they use the latin alphabet,
but I have not managed to get anywhere with Chinese, Thai and similar.

Most of the cheap hostels where I stay do not have sink plugs, so it
pays to carry a "fits all sinks" type of stopper.  Unfortunately I
occasionally forget, and leave mine behind and have to get another.

      Title: Pernil Asado Estilo Chino-Cubano
 Categories: Main dish, Cuba, Meat
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
      1    Pork loin (4 1/2 - 5 lb)
      3 tb Soy sauce
      3 tb Sherry
      2 tb Hoisin sauce
    1/4 c  Mashed cooked black beans
      2 tb Five-spice powder
      2 tb Minced garlic
      3 tb Sugar
    1/4 c  Honey, mixed with
    1/4 c  Boiling water, for basting
 
  The culinary influence of the many Chinese laborers who flocked to
  Cuba in the mid-19th century can be seen in this roast pork dish,
  which mixes those beloved Cuban black beans with Asian seasonings.
  
  Preheat oven to 425'F. Rinse pork and pat dry. Place on rack in a
  roasting pan and fill bottom of pan with 1" of water.
  
  In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, sherry, hoisin sauce, black
  beans, five-spice powder, garlic and sugar. Mix well. Coat pork loin
  with mixture, rubbing meat all over until the mixture is used up.
  Roast pork 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 325'F. and cook 1 - 1 1/2
  hours, basting every 15 minutes with honey and water mixture. When
  done, remove from oven and let cool clightly. Transfer to serving
  platter. Serves 6-8.
