Was that in Los Angeles?   Maybe he found a favourably responsive
traveller.

I don't mind either "mildly", but object to the "overly" both.

All arranged now - or so I thought.  Ha!  Today's news was that half
the pilots of Jet Airways have checked in sick (their version of going
on strike) for more pay, so flights are being cancelled in all
directions, so after paying my travel insurance, I talked to the
Sikh boss of my local travel agent, and  he has now arranged an
alternative block booking on Air India (gloom), but has not cancelled
the existing booking.  He said it is the start of the tourist season,
so that is the time usually chosen by the pilots to go on strike.
Same as in Australia the strikes are normally just before Christmas.

Nancy leaves for Turkey tomorrow.  Tonight's news showed pictures of
the worst floods for 80 years in Istanbul, and mentioned that the road
from the airport to the city was closed.  I am waiting for her first
trip report.

      Title: INDIAN CHILLI PICKLE
 Categories: Condiments, Indian, Asia-w, Charmaine
      Yield: 1 servings
 
      1 kg Chillies; long, hot, red
           ;or green chillies
      1 tb Salt
      1 tb Ground turmeric
      2 tb Black mustard seeds
    125 ml Vinegar
      2 tb Chopped garlic
    500 ml Mustard oil
      1 ts Fenugreek seeds
      2 ts Nigella seeds
      2 ts Crushed asafoetida
 
  Wash chillies and dry them well. Cut off stalks and slice chillies
  across into 1cm slices.
  
  Sprinkle with salt and turmeric, toss to mix evenly, cover and leave
  for 2 days in the sun or place in a very low oven for 2 ho rs each
  day.
  
  Soak mustard seeds in vinegar overnight, and grind in an electric
  blender with the garlic.
  
  Heat oil in a large pan and add the fenugreek and nigella seeds. Stir
  and fry until fenugreek is golden brown, then add the asa oetida,
  stir once, and add the blended mixture and the chillies together with
  the liquid that will have gathered.
  
  Cook, stirring now and then, until oil rises and chillies are cooked
  but not too soft. Cool and put into sterilised jars.
