==============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> I have just seen an advert for the 12 year old "The Glenlivet" on
GJ> special at 2 for $90. No price for the single bottle, but at a guess,
 GJ> probably about $50. Should I?

 ML> Yes, perhaps a few dozen. A somewhat a propos e-mail I
ML> received from a friend who runs a marketing research
 ML> company:

ML> drinking in his room and he saved the
ML> malts. He had amassed 135 bottles, and
ML> bought between five and ten a year.
ML> I asked what he planned to do with them.
ML> He said when he retired he was going
ML> to drink them one by one until he was dead.

ML> Algorithm: figure out the number of special occasions a
ML> year. Count on a bottle per special occasion (you will
ML> presumably not be drinking alone). Multiply by two for
ML> a cushion. Cash in that pension.

OK, assume about 7 purchases a year, and he has 135 already. If he
started at age 22 (USA legal), he is now 42 years. If he retires at
65, that is another 23 years, ie 151 bottles, to a total of 286. The
important point is how many he would drink per week. That could be
anything from 1 to 7, meaning he would live until age 66 to 70. If
particularly abstemious, he could live forever!

ML> There is the issue that the precursors of today's domestic
ML> dogs ate their prey bones, feathers, skin, and all, so why not
ML> Fido, er, Rover? But mankind's taking charge of natural selection
ML> may well have produced etiolated sissydogs that can't tolerate
ML> the diet of their ancestors.

A British TV program on tonight dwells on pedigree breeding, resulting
in freakish bone structures and deformities of such dogs.

GJ> My dogs have all been relatively close to their progenitors, with good
GJ> jaws and teeth capable of crunching up their prey, but I would have
GJ> doubts about the capabilities of Pekinese and similar to adequately
GJ> handle any small birds or animals.

ML> Not all dogs have been robust products of a vigorous environment
ML> as yours have. I've seen some that look as though they'd not
ML> be able to wrestle a caterpillar to the ground, much less crunch
ML> up glorious ruddy piles of bones.

I like observing the effortless way in which dog Tex crushes quite
strong bones into shards, which she disintegrates further, before
swallowing.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Nancy Backus <=-

GJ> peas, and tried to chew up the pods and all. One of the serving
GJ> ladies told me that was wrong, and to just eat the beans. They were
GJ> nothing special. Some years later, in a sushi restaurant in NZ, I

ML> Did their hairy and unprepossessing appearance (given Singapore and
ML> Japanese) not provide a clue?

It should have, but I was tired, and the light was poor.

GJ> came across fermented soya beans. Those were just the bare beans,
GJ> fermented to produce strings of white slime. They looked quite
GJ> disgusting, but tasted OK, with a slight sourness.

ML> Natto looks and tastes like mucus. Whether this is okay or not
ML> is up to each individual to decide.

I dutifully ate them, to give them a chance to appeal to me, but
finally decided not to bother with them again, except, of course to
impress an audience with delicate sensibilities.

Recently I tried the local Vietnamese balut, out of nostalgia, but at
$1.50 it was disappointing and not worth it. Whoever supplies them to
the local shop doesn't allow them to mature sufficiently. There was
still quite a lot of yolk left, and the duckling's head and beak were
not fully formed.
