There has been some discussion here about Hamburger places.

One of the places mentioned was called FatBurger, and we recalled that
there was one within a short distance from us.  So, a couple days ago we
decided to give it a try.

We got there late afternoon and the place was empty.  We ordered from
the menu board.  One Fatburger (1/3 lb) and one Kingburger with cheese
(1/2 lb).  Also got an order of onion rings and two sodas.  Total bill,
with tax came to $17.67 -- not cheap, but not too bad either.

The burgers were cooked on demand, not precooked such as at McDonalds.
I could see him put it on the grill and they looked like preformed
patties, fairly uniform but not perfectly round.  During the cooking,
I could see him press on them -- not a good sign in my book.

When the burgers came, they were dressed with chopped lettuce, tomato
and other things that pretty much doubled the thickness.  My Kingburger
was the same thickness as Gail's Fatburger, but a larger diameter burger
on a larger diameter bun.   Both burgers were pretty good.  Although we
did not ask, nor did they offer, the burgers were not cooked to death
and still had a slight tinge of pink.  I'd say medium as opposed to the
all grey medium-well that you usually get.  If you pulled off a hunk of
meat, it tasted good.  The lettuce and stuff did tend to hide the flavor
a bit. Next time we will leave the lettuce off.

Our one big criticism was the buns.  Both buns were like we have had
from cheap store brand buns.  Before we were 1/3 done with the burger
the top bun had totally peeled off its brown crust and was beginning to
break up into pieces.  We much prefer some sort of a roll with a decent
crust that can hold together while eating.

The menu board price for the Fatburger was $4.29.  The Kingburger was
$5.29, but they tacked on an extra 60 cents for cheese.  I did not ask
for bacon, but it would have been 80 cents extra.  Another extra that
might be worth the price was adding another patty for $2.00. That means
you could get a one pound burger for $7.29, or a 1 1/2 lb burger for
$9.29.

Our conclusions -- they are up on the list of burgers we like.  Our
previous favorite of Five Guys has slipped down another notch.  Five
Guys is less expensive, and has free peanuts -- but we think that the
one thick patty of Fatburger gives a better result than the two thin
patties of Five Guys.

The comparison to Chee-burger is less clear.  We think that the
burger in a FatBurger is a bit better than what is in a Chee-burger but
not by much.  The Chee-burger bun is a lot better, but still not
perfect.  The onion rings at Fatburger are decent, but those at
Chee-burger were a lot better.  Chee-burger has a huge selection of
quality milkshake flavors and the egg cream that Dave Sacerdote liked.
Fatburger had milk shakes, but we only ordered soft drinks and so cannot
compare that part of it.

We are less certain about the choice between Fatburger and McDonald's
new Angus burger.  At $3.89 for a good 1/3 lb burger with bacon and
cheese, McDonalds is the value meal.
