 HN> Hey Bob!

HN> I wonder what the summer water temps in
HN> the great lakes is? I'm a firm believer in fish

The salmon stay down deep. The water on the surface warms enough
for swimming except in Lake Superior. The salmon school up before
spawning and hold in the 55 degree water, which is about 80 feet
down. When the water near shore cools to that temperature, then
they are out just off shore where you can catch them casting from
the shore. They have pretty much stopped feeding at that point,
but the state changed the rules a few years back where they are
the only fish that can be kept if foul hooked now. Most fishing
in the lakes is done trolling downriggers from a boat.

Lake water is Low 70's in August. Except for Lake Erie which is
shallow so warms early on. No salmon are there, they tried planting
them, but they never took. There are no naturally spawning fish in
the great lakes. As they only return to the stream they are imprinted
with, Michigan and the surrounding states build weirs on those streams
and take all the the spawning salmon out. Then they use the eggs and
milt to create a new batch for planting. The fish are sold to pet
 food canneries.

If they were allowed in the streams they would destroy the native
trout populations. They spawn sooner and eat all the trout feed. The
first few years they let them spawn but it made for a stinking mess
of fish along the river shorelines. We aren't talking western rivers
five hundred yards wide, these are streams that would more appropriately
be called creeks. Littered with fish it attracted all the black bears
that usually eat at the county dumps in and people started having bear
problems. The trout is our big sport fish.

When the Seaway was opened for shipping, a little fish called an
alewife came in. Like a shad, they had no natural predators and
went nuts. Cluttering the beaches, stinking up the world where
tractors with huge screens on the front were running up and down
the beach sand piling them into huge piles at the end to burn.
Then someone found out that Atlantic Salmon (Coho ) would eat them.
A new fishery was established that now brings a lot of sports fisher
folks in to catch them. They grow to larger size in the lakes because
of the abundance of food. Kings will reach 100 pounds.

HN> from cold waters. Here in the summers I seldom

Trout is my least favorite fish. I love to catch them on flies but
seldom keep them. To mushy for me.

HN> Streams and river fish however stay in cold
HN> water year round and are always flavorful
HN> and firm and much better tasting !!
HN> The water temps in Puget sound are
HN> fairly stable and cold only varying about
HN> 8-9 degrees from winter to summer and
HN> seldom warmer than 54 F even on hot summers.
HN> This keeps salmon (and other fish as well)
 HN> nice and firm..and tasty!

Chuckle, Our water gets solid on the top in the winter. The ice on
Lake Michigan is broken up by storms and blown up on the beaches.
It's really a neat sight to ski out along the beach wearing cross
country skis to see ice piles ten to twenty feet thick along the
beach. Do it in Jan - march at dusk and you will be treated to a
display of deer and elk coming down to the shoreline to feed on the
 berries.

-> When younger, we would cut the tail sections off an 8 to 10 pound fish
-> and freeze that part in the dry ice coolers.
 ->
-> The body cavity would be set in aluminum foil rubbed with butter,
-> a thin sliced onion spread throughout and a half can of chopped tomato
-> poured in juice and all. Seal the foil packet and set about ten inches
-> from the campfire, turn to the other side after about twenty minutes.
-> Two or three fish like that, a package of crackers and a few beers with
-> good friends made some of the fondest memories I have of fishing trip
 ->  eating.

HN> We did something similar, although I never used
HN> tomato with fish. We'd slice an onion thin, a lemon
HN> thin and toss those into the cavity as well as some
HN> herbs (usually thyme or tarragon) and salt and pepper.
HN> eating using fingers and crackers....and beer or wine,
 HN> it don't get much better'n that!
 HN> chat with you soon!
 HN> hap

Yup, fingers, crackers and fish around a campfire on a cold October
 evening. That's real living.
