Hey Janis!

->
-> Yes, that's the truth <grin>.  Hey,
-> got "Ominvore's Dilemma" today, and "In
-> Defense of Food" .. they were both on
-> sale.. which was handy -  Omnivore's
-> Dilemma is great :) Thanks for mentioning it :)
->

Happy that you like it and glad you find it
an interesting read, and hopefully a bit
educational as well!

->
-> I dunno :) Here's a list of some of the stuff they offer there:
->
-> Pears Anjou     2
-> Oranges Navel  3
-> Banana         1.00 lb
-> Apples Granny Smith    2
-> Spinach        1
-> Potatoes Russet        1.00 lb
-> Lettuce Green Leaf     1
-> Broccoli       1
-> Carrots        1
->
-> The above would cost $25.00 including shipping...
-> they call this their "bitty
-> box" (very small).
->

It's obvious that it's a bit different than
the one local here. Here it's all local grown
produce, no citrus or tropical fruits. Pears
apples and apricots and fruits that are grown
here in Washington are in the baskets (I suppose
they keep them in cold storage to parcel out
each week throughout the year. Still the list
above seems a bit pricey to me...must be the
shipping charges I suppose!

-> As opposed to their LARGE box (this is the type I got last year that
cost me
-> $60.00 every two weeks):
->
-> Tangelos        8
-> Pears Anjou    8
-> Oranges Navel  8
-> Banana         2.50 lb
-> Apples Granny Smith    8
-> Tomatoes Grape         1.00 1 pint
-> Spinach        1
-> Potatoes Russet        2.50 lb
-> Mushrooms White 1LB    1
-> Lettuce Green Leaf     1
-> Cilantro       1
-> Beans Green    1
-> Broccoli       1
-> Carrots        1
-> Chard Red      1
->
-> They describe this box as: 5-6 fruit types + 9-10 veggie varieties. Now
one of
-> these days I ought to go over to our grocery store (We normally shop at
a chain
-> in the NE named Wegmans.. it's very much like Kroger if you're familiar
with
-> that) and buy the same exact items lb for lb in the Organic Fruit and
Vegetable
-> section :) I don't expect to save a lot. It seems just walking in to
the
-> grocery store these days, causes the bill to hit $300.00
-> <bg>
->
I am very prudent when I shop, (most of the time)
and I try to do my shopping no more than a week
in advance (other than frozen staples) so I manage
to keep the bill a lot lower than that (thank goodness!)
I try to shop sales so when broccoli is on sale
we get broccoli...when it's not we don't (g)

->
-> I can understand that :) People want to be able to buy foodstuffs that
do not
-> rot the day you get them home outside of the Supermarket Environment <g>

-> > ->
-> > That certainly makes sense!
->
-> Yeah, it was handy.. They can't eat citrus, we can.. They like brussel
sprouts
-> I don't (that's a joke <bg>).
->
I LOOOOVE brussels sprouts! $1.98 a pound this week
and still a good buy. Broccoli is $0.74 a pound,
leeks are $1.89 a pound.

-> > ->
-> > A good garden can really give you an edge up

->
-> That's neat :) Since we moved back to NY from KY about 5+ years ago,
I've been
-> gardening in my backyard in 6 raised-beds.. Need another bed this year
<grin>.
-> In KY, I only grew tomatoes and potatoes.. was just toooooo hot out
there for
-> me to really do much... In NY I complain about the cold like crazy, but
darnit,
-> I can work easier here in the spring <grin> Heat and me don't mix <g>
->
Me either!

-> > who have been to our place for echo gathering

-> > it was at one time our veggie garden! The big benefit

-> > in the supermarket, or are very expensive. you can grow
->
-> Yes :) A couple of years, I ordered a slew of various chinese vegetables
-> seed... Dakon Radish,Bok choy, Cabbage.. geez, I can't even remember..
it was
-> really nice to be able to just "have" what I needed given what I felt
like
-> experimenting with <grin>
->
Those are the things that it really
pays off to grow.

-> > heirloom potatoes and tomatoes (much better than the
-> > commercial production ones), herbs, and odd varieties
->
-> Oh yeah.. my son is still asking me if we have any "Mommy Garden
pototoes or
-> Tomatoes haha..
->
Those are the best kinds! (grin)

-> > of things that you like. Joan M and I were discussing a

-> > you the link and you could investigate it if you grow
-> > tater's at all. It's a GREAT method!
->
-> I think I saw it, and I grabbed it then.. but what the heck did I call
that
-> file?? <laugh>.. needless to say, I think yeah, post it again :)
->
-> Last summer, I had two kinds of pototoes going butter and red.. they were
soooo
-> good :)
->
Go have a look at ciscoe.com it should still be there!
chat with you soon
