 All animals should have all internal functioning parts removed for
 evaluation prior to preparation and consumption.   Your method of
 preparation sounds about right, though I haven't cooked one in twenty
 years, that is what I would do today if one ended up on my kitchen
 sink.

 OIh yes, they will do that, but as a kid who knocked off many of them,
 their preferred diet is fields of clover.  Clover provides feed from
 first melt to end of season.   Corn shoots and others of course will be
 eaten as they are opportunist eating anything tasty.  Sort of like us
 in a way.  An apple tree will usually have a few munchers in the fall.
 They are diggers and they dig big holes.   A good dairy cow who also
 likes clover stepping in one of those holes will break a leg and have
 to be destroyed.  That's why we were allowed to shoot them all year
 round in Pennsylvania.  Finding them is easy, just walk the hedgerows
 looking for big holes.  At the bottom of trees (woodchucks) they dig
 under the tree to keep animals from digging down after them.  They will
 also dig under a big rock for the same reason.   Best way to hunt them
 is to sit down and wait within shooting range of where you saw it go
 underground.  Soon they will come out of the hole and start eating
 clover.  When you see them, you whistle (whistle pigs another name)
 they will sit up on their haunches to see where the sound came from and
 you can get a good head shot with a 22 LR hollow point.  You only shoot
 them in the head, otherwise they crawl back in the holes and die.  That
 is all I know about groundhogs from experience.
