Ärende: Re: Pink Trout
======================
HIya Bob!

->
-> -> When you bring up a fish from the deep, it takes a while.
-> -> If they come up to fast the swim bladder comes out and they
-> -> aren't fun to fight with then.
->  ->
-> HN> I've never had that happen with a salmon, and I've caught
-> HN> them as deep as 200+ feet.
->
-> We fish using a lead ball of about 25 pounds for sinkers called a
-> downrigger. Process goes like this, find the school on the depth
-> finder, drop a thermometer until it reads 55 degrees, note the depth.
-> Set a lure usually a spinner about a foot long on the end of the line,
-> then attache a quick release to the line just ahead of the lure to a
-> steel cable trailing the lead ball and fitted out with flashing blue
-> and white attracters about a foot and a half long. Now the entire
-> contraption is lowered to the premarked dept. When the fish takes
-> the lure, it pulls the line free of the downrigger stuff and the boat
-> speed starts pulling it to the surface. You have to grab the line
-> quick and set the hook.
->
We do it the same way, and I've never had a
swim bladder problem with any salmon I've
caught no matter the depth...now I've
certainly had it with other fish like rock bass,
snappers, and cod but never with salmon.

-> Because we fish in lakes that are only 70 - 85 miles wide, not a big
-> ocean, we get shorter rollers so the boat has more of a tendency to
-> bob up and slide backwards down. This means you have to run the boat
-> faster because we are generally in smaller boats from 18 to 35 feet
-> long. They will slide backwards down a steep roller other wise
-> letting slack into the line for the fish to get off. All of that
-> means you have to keep a tight line and sometimes they come up to
->  fast.
->
Puget Sound doesn't get big waves often and there are
enough Islands and such to keep them broken up when
there are prevailing wind generated waves.

-> HN> Right now the salmon are heading up the rivers
-> HN> to spawn...and the fishermen at all standing
-> HN> shoulder to shoulder in the river trying to catch
-> HN> em before they do! What's really funny is when
-> HN> one guy hooks a fish and fouls his line with
->  HN> 10-15 other folks immediately!
->
-> They are more civilized here. Generally that is, but not always.
-> When someone yells fish on, they all pull in their line and give
-> them room to fight the fish. None here are fishing for food, so
-> you have a substantial group who are using light spinning gear
-> with 8-12 pound test line.
->
That's the accepted procedure here as well.
But with more and more fishermen on the river
there simply isn't time to get your gear out of
the way before the fish makes his first run downstream.

-> At the cost for license, travel and accommodations, you can buy a lot
-> more and better tasting fish at the fish market. Most of the shore
-> fishermen are living in tents at local State Forest campgrounds, in
-> the northern half of the lower or in the Upper Peninsula.
->
Yep, which is why I haven't been fishing in a
while. Anne won't eat em, and it's just not as
fun having to cook just for me.

-> The fish in the southern parts of the state are blocked at power damns
-> so fishermen there either charter boats or own their own. However you
-> do it, it is far from subsistence fishing and costly.
->
-> -> a third salmon that doesn't get as large and runs after the winter
-> -> cold settles in. They all look the same to me, and none of
-> -> them look like that pink stuff they sell in the supermarket.
->  ->
-> HN> I have not had canned salmon in more than 30 years!
->  HN> more like 40 I'd think!
->
-> A tunafish sandwich I can get into, but I like mine with onions,
-> Dorothy likes celery and hates onions. So it has been a while since
->  I've had any either.
->
I had a tuna sandwich the other day
from Subway...first one I've had in years.

-> -> HN> Our rivers run cold...reallly cold and trout
-> -> HN> in those rivers really taste good! Not mushy
-> -> HN> not soft and not muddy.
->  ->
-> -> They aren't muddy here but they are a soft flesh. I prefer my fish
->  ->  firm and flaky.
->  ->
-> HN> Up here the trout from rivers ARE firm and
->  HN> flakey!
->
-> -> It doesn't get as cold as it once did, and that is presenting a
-> -> problem. If the lakes don't freeze over in the winter, evaporation
-> -> removes to much water lowering the water levels creating a problem
-> -> with shipping.. During other seasons rivers running in from Ontario
-> -> keep them pretty full, but it doesn't rain water in the winter and
-> -> the Ontario rivers run low.
->  ->
-> HN> We keep our snow in the mountains where it
-> HN> stays well behaved (well most of the time) until
-> HN> spring and summer when it melts and feeds the
->  HN> rivers..keeping them nice and coooold!
->
-> Our snow melts off by March usually. But the stuff that falls up
-> by Jim and east keeps the river running down from Canada.
->
We usually have snow up in the higher elevations
well into June and in the really high elevations it's
there year round...and glaciers as well...although the
glaciers are melting more and more each year..inspite
of the folks who claim there's no global warming!

->  ->  ->  HN> We did something similar, although I never used
->  ->  ->  HN> tomato with fish. We'd slice an onion thin, a lemon
-> -> -> HN> thin and toss those into the cavity as well as some
-> -> -> HN> herbs (usually thyme or tarragon) and salt and pepper.
->  ->
-> -> Chuckle.. This was before cooking entered my life. Onions, Parkay
-> -> and a couple cans of tomatoes with a lot of beer was our groceries
->  ->  assortment.  :-)
->  ->
->  HN> I didn't even consider that cooking!
->
-> Chuckle, I still don't. But then I found out there's a lot more to
-> cooking than just making food hot.
->
->  ->  HN> Dem was the days....we thought they'd never
->  ->  HN> end......then we got old (grin)!
->  ->
-> -> Don't I know it. Looks like I'm going to have another resident here.
-> -> Dorothy's dad is in the hospital and can no longer live alone. So
-> -> either he stays here, or she goes to his house. I'm spoiled rotten.
-> -> Someone to do my laundry and a fantastic cook.. We will try him
here.
->  ->
-> HN> Good luck buddy...It's gonna be tough I'm sure!
->
-> He is helping me reply to this message now, so I best make this one
-> the last one for today.
-> ... Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what
happened.
->
Wave to him for me! (grin)
chat with you soon!
