============================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> My high school had French and Spanish. I think they brought Latin

-> Ours had French for a time but discontinued it before I started. My
-> it was gone from the school.  Spanish had taken hold a few years before;
-> it was taught thru-out the school. I had it in grades 3-8; enough hung
-> on to tangle with the German.

 RH> We used to have a big French Canadian population in this area,
 RH> although few of the descendants still speak the language.

No surprise that French was offered as a high school language choice
then.

-> the same size. I did a scrappy quilt for Sarah last year using that
-> pattern--13 pink fabrics, 6 blue & 6 green.

 RH> That's good for using up bits and pieces.

Yes, and it made a nice looking quilt too. I used pink gingham as the
alternating square as well as the backing & binding.

-> I've several ideas kicking around. While I'm deciding, I'm cutting my
-> scrap box down into layer cakes, jelly rolls, charms, etc.

 RH> I tend not to have a scrap box; I make the scraps into random patch
 RH> quilt blocks. Not quite crazy quilting, but close.

I could do that but tend to plan my quilts a bit more. I am saving
"fancy" fabrics (ones used for prom dresses, etc) for a Victorian crazy
quilt--after I get more of the cotton ones sewn up.

-> kids. (G) There was a campus wide cook out Monday night; we went for a
-> bit. I believe we're in the oldest student group on campus. The cook

 RH> Second career types.

Yes, Steve had several jobs before he joined the Army but that was a
career. (G)

-> out was choice of hamburger or hot dog, "chili", chips, and cookies.
-> Drinks were water or "tropical punch". By the time we got there, there
-> was no ketchup so we had "chili" on our burgers. Not the greatest of

 RH> The punch stuff was a thing to be avoided, I'd guess. I'd also guess
 RH> there weren't any vegetarians in that bunch. Around here you have to
 RH> be prepared for people who don't eat meat.

Any vegetarians were long gone before we got there. (G) Actually,
there's probably more than we know about since there's an undergraduate
college here as well.

 RH> I forget how often we had art class, but my grandmother had me
 RH> learning sewing before I was in first grade.

We had art about once a week in grade school, every day in junior high
and as an option (which my parents wouldn't let me take as it was a non
college entrance track area) in high school. Home Ec was in junior high
only, again unless you wanted it as a non college entrance track.

-> I have too but this one was very willing to work with her school
-> schedule. She started as a cashier but within 6 weeks was doing
-> customer relations.

 RH> Quick study - that helps.

Made it nice but it also got them into having more fast food meals than
they should have since there was a McD's in the store. David would go
over on Rachel's meal breaks so they could eat together. Now that
they've got kids, they're trying to get away from a lot of fast foods.

-> It is interesting how the various states do/don't do taxes on food.

 RH> Some places tax prepared food but not raw ingredients. Snack foods
 RH> get taxed here.

I'm not 100% sure what is taxed here regarding food. Most likely fast
food and junk foods, probably more.

-> -> As I had a couple of cups, max, the other night.
 RH> ->
-> RH> That's more than I did, but I made up for it in brownies.
 RH> ->
-> OTOH, I didn't have any brownies.

 RH> I made another batch for the open mike tonight. Chocolate orange
 RH> brownies; the cake worked so well I tried it again.

May as well make it again; that way it's more ingrained into your memory
to do it in the future.

 RH> fabric
->  RH> store!

-> No, I know the cash flow in this household.

 RH> That never stopped anyone yet. Slowed it down, yes, but stopped no.

We're saving for that trip so we don't go too far into hock paying for
it as well as our other bills.

-> RH> The cheesecake might have managed it!

-> That was a seriously bad cheesecake.

 RH> Mushy pumkin flavored ... mush. No sweetness at all, and no milk
 RH> products to give it some reason to bother eating it. Nasty crust.

IOW, totally forgettable.

Catch you later,
Ruth
