============================
Hi Nancy,

 RH> year, it was gone from the school. Spanish had taken hold a few years
 RH> before; it was taught thru-out the school.  I had it in grades 3-8;
 RH> enough hung on to tangle with the German.

 NB> That last line made me laugh... I had a similar instance when in
 NB> college, taking scientific German... I had had Latin in 9th and 10th,
 NB> and three years of French crammed into 11th and 12th (long story,
 NB> including two different schools of which one was small and the other
 NB> large, and a move from one state to another)... When I was taking the
 NB> German, one major test was questions in German, which were to be
 NB> answered also in German. On one question my mind went blank, and
 NB> while I knew what it was asking for, I couldn't think of the answer...
 NB> in
 NB> German OR English... only in French... Finally, after staring at it
 NB> for a while, I wrote a note to the teacher, explaining the situation,
 NB> and
 NB> answering in French. Amazingly, she accepted that... well, maybe not
 NB> TOO amazing, seeing as she was a Ukrainian native, who spoke many
 NB> languages fluently, including, but not limited to, Russian, Ukrainian,
 NB> German, English, French, and I don't remember what else... Her accent
 NB> was from her native language, I believe, and there had been a time or
 NB> two in class when she'd switched languages when the right word
 NB> wouldn't come to mind in English... :)

She probably had had lots of times when one language tangled with
another. Russian and Ukranian are probably very similar, German close
enough to both of them that it would easly fit in. But both French and
English are so different, both from each other and the Slavic languages,
that she must have had an interesting time picking them up.

 -> RHan> Not very. It costs more in gas to get to Massachusetts or NY
 -> RHan> than does to pay the taxes.
 -> It was a thought. Depends on how groceries are/aren't taxed in each
 -> state as well.
 NB> RHan> Some things are, and some aren't.

 RH> It is interesting how the various states do/don't do taxes on food.

 NB> Very true. Here, food isn't taxed in the grocery store, except for
 NB> carbonated beverages (they also have a deposit on the container),
 NB> candy, and hot prepared foods. Maybe some other stuff I never get,
 NB> but I think that's all... :)

And we aren't in the state that often to be aware of what's taxed and
what isn't. Whenever we do go to Wegman's or any place like that, we
just look at the bottom line; that's the important one. I don't know if
counties decide to tax some foods or if it's a state wide decision as to
what is/isn't; I suspect the latter.

Friday night after my class got out, Steve picked me up and we went over
to McDs for a couple of M&M McFlurries (to go). When we got home, I had
some things to put away and get ready for Saturday's class but I saw
Steve pull out the kitchen scale. Later he said that they looked to be
quite different in the amount given so he wanted to weigh them. There
was enough of a discrepency that he took some from the heavier and added
it to the lighter.

Catch you later,
Ruth
