 Subject: Passports<Ruth Haffly>

RH> OK, but that's just like the passport card.

BG> Exactly right, but combined with a drivers license.

RH> Helps to cut down on the amount of paperwork needed for travel, even
 RH> to/from those countries.

Major plus is you don't have to plan on crossing the boarder when
you leave home. Like in the old days, you just can if you feel
like it. Everything over there is discount priced for a while
to me. I still have Canadian currency that I bought for 64 cents
on the dollar. Before our little emperor who liked to start wars
and rape treasuries took over and destroyed our dollars value. Now
it would take me 98 cents to buy the same dollar over there. Last
fall I would have even been required to give them an additional dime
to take one of my U.S. dollars.

RH> And, since NC isn't a border state--except to VA, SC, TN, etc

BG> And those in fact are more foreign than any Canadian Province in
BG> their way of thinking so maybe you should need a passport... :-)

RH> Yes, none of them know how to do a good pork bbq. Matter of fact,
 RH> western NC doesn't either. (G)

Dunno. You guys cook your pigs so much you have to tear them apart
 and add flavoring after. :-)

RH> Meanwhile, as we wait, we are begining to get color on a tomato. I
RH> counted 11 on the plants today; Steve spotted the first bit of color.
RH> There are more blossoms so we should be eating fresh tomatoes for a
RH> few weeks into the fall.

How late will they go, when do you get your first frost? Ours will
be sometime this month, so we are eating good now, but will be back
 to importing pretty soon.

RH> We put in Romas; the ones we picked are "normal" size, as are some of
RH> of those still on the plant. Others are in various stages of
RH> development from smaller than a pea, on up.

The farmers market sells tomatoes they knocked off the vine picking
that are still green. Before the frost I will get a bunch of those
to put in the basement wrapped in newspaper. They will ripen over a
few months time, so I can continue to eat home grown after growing
season is passed. Plus I get at least one good feed on fried green
tomatoes, something I love but Dorothy abhors,.

RH> We do plan on using ours next year. We bought 2 but only put one up.
RH> Next year we will put both up, probably get a couple more as well. Do
RH> 3 with tomatoes, one with peppers maybe.

BG> Just keep in mind they have to be watered daily, the pot with a hole
BG> in the bottom leaks it all out. Maybe next year I will try with more
BG> dirt and less potting soil. My daughter put the dirt in it. I just

RH> Steve put lots of dirt in and we've had no trouble with it leaking
RH> out. Did yours have a foam "plug" with a cut out for the plants?

Yes, foam with a slot. It is filled 3/4 of the way up with dirt.

RH> We got ours after our vacation. Part of the plants have died but
RH> there's still enough live area that the tomatoes are producing well.

Mine made nice tomatoes about the size of a baseball that were rotten
on the bottom. Normally I get tomatoes about the size of a softball
that ripen evenly. But I guess the fungus Wally's China-Mart imported
got the ones on the ground too. The ripen on the bottom and are still
green on the top. Next year I'll get my plants from someplace other
 than Lowes.

RH> Nice; the Farmer's Market we usually go to was pretty much out of them
RH> on Saturday. I didn't get any but our first will be ready for eating
RH> soon. There's another one coming along well behind that and a 3rd
RH> getting just a blush of color.

BG> I don't really go to a farmers market as many stands have come to be
BG> called, but go to a vegetable farm where the farmers market stand
BG> folks go to buy their things to sell. Good sweet corn is now $1 a
 BG> dozen.
BG> A bushel of tomatoes for canning are $6... Good place to buy
 BG> veggies.

RH> I'd have to go down into Raleigh to the state Farmer's Market to get
RH> anywhere close to those prices. Don't know of any closer, wish there
 RH> were.

I stayed in Raleigh at the Marriott Center near downtown. As I was only
there for a week, I didn't request a car and used the buss to get around,
so didn't see a lot of the area. It did seem riding in the shuttle out
to the Nortel school, there were a lot of local small farms in the area
that could have made for good veggies local.

... A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
