We belonged to both when they first opened up here in Anchorage.  When we first
joined Costco they sold quality name brand products.  Then slowly they dropped
them and started selling "Kirkland" brand, pissed me off when I tried to buy a
deep-cycle battery and all they had was Kirkland.  Now you have to look very
carefully at products with a manufacturer you don't recognize, often they're
Kirkland renamed.  We dropped Costco this year.  Sams club followed Costco's
lead, I noticed Costco doing it well before Sams, with their "MembersMark"
brand.  We decided that keeping both was nonsensical, we used to shop the
Costco
closest to us until we discovered the only thing we actually went there for
were
the books/DVD's and meats.  The Sams club on this side of town is very old, was
named several things before, and doesn't have a meat department.  The Sams in
the south part of town does so we shop there for books/DVD's and meats,
surprise.  The last big ticket item we bought at Sams was a 37" LCD TV.  The
Sams on this side of town is slated for shutdown and a new one is going to be
built.

Nationally Sams are everywhere.  Once you get east of Denver Costco seem to be
hard to find.  Perhaps if we were actually living in a largish city it might be
different.
