IX. Miscellaneous

Munz gelee fruit-flavored jellies - lemon and orange were the usual
thing, sort of lollipoppy; but the berry flavor tasted just like dish
soap - utterly nasty.

Narragansett lager was a completely neutral-tasting beverage, hardly
recognizable as beer, except that it gave me a headache.

I bought a bag of Porkie brand barbecue flavor pork rinds back in
Williamsport, on the strength of the cute logo (a smiling piglike
face in a chef hat), but returned to the store on the strength of
the taste, which was excellent. I got one each of the regular and
the barbecue for Dave's edification. Didn't have a chance to taste
the regular, but I'm sure Dave will tell all. While looking for
Porkie brand on the Internet, I found the following rather odd
Amazon listing:

ML milk chocolate-coated sunflower seeds - courtesy of Lynnie -
excellent sunflower flavor and good (i.e., non-cheesy) milk
chocolate. Pink and brown colors made them seem even snazzier.

Trekking Mahlzeit canned cheeseburger - hah, another grail food.
I suppose that one kisses a lot of Boone's Farm bottles before one
finds the cup of eternal mercy ... this was a truly nasty thing:
a squashed thing of cheap bun, cheap meat (reminding one of the
worst aspects of meatloaf and Spam), canned processed cheese,
lettuce, and tomato ... the aroma was of mustard and the highly
incongruous nutmeg. None of us could get more than one bite of
this down, it was so bad. I bet Andrew Zimmern wouldn't eat it.

X. I would be remiss not to mention the Turkish eggplant and
kofta kebabs that Dave made for us. You alternate red pepper
strips, seasoned meatballs, and oiled eggplant rounds, grill
them up, and collect compliments. A most simple but delicious
dish.

XI. and finally at some airport or other

McDonald's, Quizno's, Aunt Annie's, and Manchu Wok didn't appeal,
so the only thing left was Mamma Ilardo's. I had a lot of pills
burning my pocket, so for the price of a Big Mac and small fries
I got two slices of pepperoni pizza, a substantial amount of food.
The thin crust wasn't bad but was on the salty side. Spread this
with crushed canned tomatoes, unadulterated but for quite a bit
of basil, topped with grainy cheese that was somehow Cheddarlike
(does anyone remember a short-lived chain that offered pizza made
with Cheddar? It was called Beadles or Bodles or Boodles or something
like that; its logo was a Union Jack), and a sprinkling of slightly
smoky but mostly synthetic-tasting slices. Nourishing, I suppose,
not too greasy, but nothing else good to say. 

Crush Grape grape soda, naturally and artificially flavored
(a product of Dr. Pepper/Seven Up Inc.) - I walked by the vending
machine and saw row upon row of bottles of purple liquid, which
brought to mind the olden days, when my father would offer to
buy me a Coke, but I always wanted to taste new things, one of
which was Nehi grape - this was one of my favorites through the
late '60s ... so in a fit of nostalgic taste buds, I forked over
$2 for a pint of the stuff: what the heck, a Bud Light costs 5.50
in the airport. What came reminded me a bit of the old grape soda
but was hugely more carbonated and somewhat more sweet; the fizz
lent a peculiar spicy aspect. Almost everything was reconciled with
memory when I got rid of some of the carbonation (resulting in goo
on my luggage and my fingers), except that the HFCS sweetness was
accentuated. From the label: "contains no juice" - but 83g of sugar
per bottle, that's 6 Tb or as much as in three Snickers bars or
8 Tootsie pops. Ingredients: carbonated water, HFCS, tartaric acid,
citric acid, sodium benzoate, grape juice concentrate, acacia gum,
artificial flavor, red 40, blue 1. So there's juice after all, but
only enough to qualify for natural flavoring status, I guess.
