Ärende: Thanksgiving Dinner

Today is T-day in Canada and the big family feast was yesterday. It
was similar to most previous years: gathering of the northern branch
of the clan at Sandra's (my SIL) who does the bird, one of those
giant Mennonite turkeys. Everyone brings a side dish. Raine did her
keynote composed salad, Roslind made her famous mushroom-sour cream
sauce, mulled cider and pumpkin pies. With sides of stuffing,
potatoes, gravy, a green veg, a yellow veg, salads, pickles,
relishes and pies it's a typical Canadian T-day meal with two
northern notes... we always bake bannock and make wild lingon berry
sauce, not jellied cranberry sauce. (We harvested a pint right from
our yard after the first frost and before it snowed, plus another
gallon from a nearby berry bush a mile out of town). Ray's girl
friend Sheila is now the official family bannock maker and brought
two kinds, a traditional lard based one and a butter and sugar one
with currants and other dried fruit, a sort of dessert bannock.

One highlight was the wine. Sandra's guy Matthew leans towards lite
beer and cheap sweet domestic wines most of the time but sprang for
a bottle of 2004 Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc this year. Also Drambuie
for afters.

The gathering was smaller than in previous years: Matthew's mom has
passed away, Sandra's son who is a chef now lives in Calgary and
has a live-in girlfriend and step-son, BIL Barry now has a
girlfriend who cooks and BIL Boyd pulled a 16 hour shift dispatching
cabs so that two family guys could have the day off. He often does
that on Christmas Day as well. As usual, we delivered a hot plate to
the taxi dispatch office for him so he did not miss out entirely.

Sandra doesn't do leftovers so I inherited a pint of rendered turkey
fat and the carcass which shall become some sort of soup in due
course, which Sandra will get half of by way of reward for not
throwing the carcass away.

All in all it was a pleasant day.
