-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> cockpit: "Flight attendants, be seated immediately. Do
ML> not secure drink carts." I don't recall any large metal
ML> vehicles wildly careering down the aisle, but there was
GJ> That is interesting, as it would imply that the welfare of FAs was
GJ> being considered as being more important than that of passengers.

ML> Well, it implied that the FAs were in danger of more
ML> serious injury than drink carts would cause. Probably
ML> the cockpit decided that the chance of up-and-down
ML> turbulence was greater than the side-to-side motion
ML> or porpoising that would destabilize the carts.

If something is going to fall on me I would rather have a relatively
soft flight attendant than a loaded drink cart.

ML> I believe that the issue was "death or dismemberment."
ML> The announcement was delivered with a certain amount
 ML> of urgency.

How comforting for the passengers!

GJ> Hopefully you saved yours by pouring it down your neck.

ML> There really wasn't the opportunity.

How sad! All that Courvoisier splattered over the ceiling.

ML> taxi to a gate, as there were numerous strikes on the
ML> tarmac while we sat (ramp personnel are of course not
ML> allowed to work during a thunderstorm).
GJ> Holding up those guide batons certainly would be a hazard.

ML> Nope, ground conduction would be the main hazard.

If the guide stood with his feet close together that should not be a
problem. Yesterday a 12 year old girl was struck by lightning in a
thunderstorm near Adelaide. She survived, with burns to her back.

ML> Not usually United, but on average a pilot on a US carrier
ML> is cited for over-limit blood alcohol 11 times a year. This
GJ> Shouldn't that alcoholic pilot be sacked?! (Sorry; I couldn't resist
 GJ> that.)

ML> Why should he be a butt for your attempts at humor?

Because he would be bottom on my list of preferred pilots.

ML> normal circumstances the plane can land itself, anyhow.
GJ> Ah, such blind faith in technology! As a mechanical engineer, I look
GJ> out at all the bits and pieces grinding away in the wings and worry.

ML> But they grind away in a prescribed and fairly predictable manner!

Usually, but those Airbus flap motors always sound to me as if they
about to seize up or burn out. That worries me, particularly if it
would happen on one side only.

Did you realise that in its 20 years of service the total number of
space shuttle flights is far less than what would be considered
adequate before putting a new civilian aircraft into service? I
admire those surviving astro- cosmo- and other nauts who fly in them.

GJ> I find a fault with the electronic entertainment system and wonder if
GJ> it is maintained by the same people who do the aircraft control
GJ> electronics, and worry some more.
ML> There is that. Luckily the airlines are thinking "let's not get
ML> sued, let's use our limited resources on aircraft maintenance."

When an airline is going bust, maintenance is one of the first things
to suffer. It starts with faulty toilets not being fixed (noted on
PAL and Ansett), then moves on to more critical items, such as the
hours between scheduled maintenance being extended further and
further, as happened with Ansett, until it was discovered and their
aircraft were grounded. At that stage they didn't care about being
sued, as there was nothing left for their creditors to claim.

With all that, flying is still safer than driving, or even walking, on
a kilometres per crash, or even hours per crash basis. I have fallen
and non-fatally (so far) injured myself while walking at least once a
year during the last 10 years or so, but have not received any
injuries as result of flying. (I do not include an injury getting onto
the Jakarta airport transfer shuttle bus as attributable to flying.)
