   I've not noticed the thought of using nut shells for smoke source,
   but it is an interesting idea.  I do recall seeing a discussion that
   one good way to get to the nutmeat in black walnuts was to put them
   into a sack and run over them with a car -- and no, I'm not kidding
   either.   My neighbor across the street has collected them
   occasionally from the woods behind our house.   The first problem is
   getting the softer outer shell off without applying a semi-permanent
   stain to your body parts.   Long rubber gloves are appropriate.
   Myself, I'd just leave them for the squirrels.   Have you ever seen a
   squirrel running along with a walnut treasure in his mouth?  That is
   a sight to behold.

  HAW yourself.   On a serious note, when we used our fireplace years
  ago, I'd use newspaper as the base for the starter kindling etc.   The
  things I read said not to use comic pages because of some of the
  things in the colored inks.


MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Egg, Bacon, and Cheese Strata
 Categories: Egg, Breakfast, Casserole, Cheese, Bread
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      6    Eggs
      2 c  Half and half
      2 ds Tabasco
      8 oz Bacon, in 2" pieces, fried
           Until crisp
      8 sl French bread
      1 c  Grated or crumbled cheese
           (cheddar, Gorgonzola,
           Gruyere, or Monterey Jack)
      3    Green onions, chopped
 
  Whisk eggs and half and half together in a large bowl. Add Tabasco.
  Butter a 2 1/2 quart casserole or souffle dish. Put a layer of bread,
  then cheese, bacon and scallions. Repeat layering until ingredients
  are gone. Pour egg mixture over. Let sit for 20 minutes so the bread
  can soak up the egg mixture. Pre-heat oven to 350F. Bake strata for
  30-35 minutes. Serve right away.
