I thought it was Verroa but in an abundance of caution looked
it up - it's Varroa, and its population spike is really ominous.

But it's not the only factor in colony collapse, which has
baffled some of the best minds in the entomological business.

Got to find an answer pretty pronto, or we're all cooked.

I've been hugged by Anna Maria Alberghetti, had Julie Andrews
wiggle her butt in my face at about 9 pm every night for a week
or two, met - in purely friendly circumstances - a gentleman
whose occupation had been to fit his customers with concrete
overshoes, cracked jokes with the US figure-skating champion,
and had a Macarthur fellowship winner push me hard to perform
his viola concerto. I'm two degrees of separation at most from
all the great 20th-century composers except possibly Debussy
and three from Brahms. I've flown a million miles in the lap
of luxury and ridden a hundred thousand in the back of a bumpy
bus. Yeah, interesting.

For me, the ratio is approximately the other way round.

By the way, my medications' side effects (as usual) have begun
to outweigh their benefits, so I'm going off them one by one.
Definitely seeking out a Chinese doctor in Singapore in January.
In the meantime am trying bearberry extract.

Broiled lamb and eggplant
cat: main
serves: 4

1 c plain yogurt
2  Tb honey
1/4 c roughly chopped fresh mint
3 Tb freshly cracked coriander seeds
s&p
4 10 oz lamb leg chops, 3/4" to 1" thick
- (or center-cut lamb leg steaks),
- trimmed of exterior fat
1 sm eggplant
1/4 c olive oil
1 Tb minced garlic.

Preheat broiler. In a small bowl, combine yogurt, honey, and
mint. Mix well and set aside.

Combine coriander and 1 Tb each salt and pepper. Rub mixture
all over the lamb. Place chops on a broiler pan, broil until
they are well seared on one side, then turn and cook to desired
doneness, about 8-10 min total cooking time for medium rare,
depending on thickness of chops. To check for doneness, cut
into one of the chops; when the center is slightly less done
than you like it, remove lamb from heat. Place chops on a
platter, cover with foil, and let rest while eggplant cooks.

Trim the top and bottom 1/2" off eggplant, then cut lengthwise
into 4 planks about 3/4" thick. Brush eggplant with olive oil,
sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, and press garlic onto
both sides. Place planks on broiler pan and broil until well
browned, very soft and moist all the way through, about 4 min a
side. Place an eggplant plank on each plate, top with a lamb chop,
spoon a couple of Tb of yogurt sauce over the top, and serve hot.
