=====================
Hi Ruth,

-> Figured the mint would carry over; it's almost indestructable. Got any
-> recipes using spearmint? (G) The rosemary is the unknown how it will
-> over winter.

 RH> I don't do gum, so no. It's not something I've run into.

I don't do gum either (TMJ issues); Steve does some but I don't think he
wants to try making his own. Another possibility would be tea but
neither of us are that fond of spearmnt tea. Hmmmmmmmm, OTOH, I might
try to figure out how gumdrops are made.

-> RH> They never do. The big old "old rose" bush however does just fine.

-> We've got several big old rose bushes, I think 5 varieties of lilies,
-> hosta, some unknowns, the rosemary and spearmint--all curtesy of

 RH> Hosta is impossible to kill, just about. Pachysandra is even tougher.

Great, that means we'll probably have to dig it up and throw it out (or
out back). It's died back for the winter now.

 RH> My old rose is a mid-19th century one; they're tough and thorny. My
 RH> mom is the gardener in the house; I'm allergic to the great outdoors.

Neither of us are real gardeners; we just play one on tv. (G) Steve did
a lot to get the back yard cleaned and cleared when we first moved here
& kept up with the basic mowing. Then classes started and he had to mow
when he could. We hired someone last month for a final mowing & clean
up the leaves; he's back today getting the rest of the leaves. Steve is
studying and doing the leaves would kick up enough mold to give my
respritory system big time problems.

-> RH> And a fork lift; it goes outside in the summer. That's one reason
->  RH> it's so big.

-> Maybe you shouldn't let it go outside in the summer?

 RH> It sure does like it, and at this point there's no reason to keep it
 RH> indoors. I don't think you can prune one of these without killing it.

I've no idea. Maybe you ought to put it on Craigslist or Freecycle and
start over with a smaller one.

-> would -> carry the basics plus some things like potato pancake mix for
-> example, -> not neccessarily a staple but "nice to have" type stuff.

-> *Amend this to "is in your local area grocery stores. Where the locals
-> shop there's more of a selection of local stuff."

 RH> Two local stores here carry Israeli imports on a regular basis, so I'm
 RH> used to getting all sorts of odd stuff.

Must be interesting. I doubt we'll get to shop in anything like a
grocery store--that's the downside of packaged tours. Depending on how
much free time they give us & we have after studies (yes, it is a study
tour), we might be able to check out a local market on our own.

-> RH> Potato pancake mixes tend to be nasty anyway. I've tried a few of

-> Never tried any but the thought of them sounds rather nasty. Much
-> better to do from scratch.

 RH> Infinitely. They're OK in a pinch and as thickener, but not as real
 RH> food.

So much of that kind of stuff is nowhere near real food.

-> RH> them. Do the commissaries make up in price what they lack in
 RH> variety?

-> Price is based on cost plus a certain percentage (last I knew, 5%) to
-> cover salaries, bags etc. There's an umbrella agency that is over all
-> military commissaries; xxCarol's stores were run by it as well as the
-> ones we shopped in, world wide.

 RH> In other words, they're pretty good at keeping prices down. You can
 RH> probably do better with sales plus coupons on the economy for some
 RH> things, but not everything.

Very much so on things like local fruits and vegetables, some on loss
leader meats. I did use a lot of coupons at the commissary too; there
are some magazines put out for military families that have coupons for
commissary use only. Came accross a few the other day while cleaning
out my coupon box.

-> RH> There's a supermarket chain here called Price Rite that sounds
 RH> about
-> RH> the same. You have to bring your own bags too, but unlike
->  RH> commissaries they don't take coupons.

-> Aldi's is like that too. I know they're in NY State; we've got one in
-> Raleigh. Selection is extremely limited tho.

 RH> We have an Aldi's around, but not close to me. I'm told limited
 RH> doesn't begin to cover it. A lot of what they stock are their own
 RH> generics.

That's the impression I got. I don't think the store we went to was any
much bigger than our house.
