I really can't figure it out - just tried to: typed out a big
disquisition on possible reasons but then deleted it, as none of
the reasons made semse. I guess the market and its forces are
opaque to me.

I got a bit dissociated and a bit nauseated. Nothing serious.

He just got rejected from law school, despite being in the
99th percentile on the LSAT. He's a bit stressed about that,
though I think he'd be about the world's worst lawyer. Case
in point. He wanted to claim me as the source of his support,
even though 1. he has a job, and 2. the checks I sign are in
my capacity as executor of the estate. I pointed out that he's
in fact the primary source of his own support (he's something
like 36 years old), and he said, oh, well, half of that goes
to the psychiatrist, so it doesn't count. Then I pointed out
that the estate and I are not identical, and I act merely as
a fiduciary, as though I were an agent or a bank or something.
He got so exercised about this that he actually consulted an
attorney or accountant about it, and I recently got an e-mail
saying that I was 100% right and he was 100% wrong, and "I
guess I owe you an apology," the rest of the note being pretty
hostile. None of us likes to be wrong. What I probably should
have done was say, okay, I'm the source of your support, now
let me deduct you off my taxes. But I really don't want to be
responsible to or for him.

I believe I've had it but blocked out the experience. A few
years ago I claimed to have done so, and that was after a trip
to Scandinavia, but I certainly don't want to remember. What's
most likely is that I found it on a buffet and had a few
milligrams of it and said enough.

Better:

Roast Cod with Puy Lentils
cat: English, French, main, fish
Serves 4

For the lentils
125g (4 oz) Puy Lentils
15g (1/2 oz) Butter
2 Shallots, peeled and finely chopped
75g (3 oz) Extra Trimmed Rindless Back Bacon, finely chopped
2 Sprigs Fresh Thyme
2 Bay Leaves (optional)
15ml (1 Tb) Tomato Puree
Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper
For the fish
50g (2 oz) Fresh White Breadcrumbs
Grated Rind of 1/2 Lemon
30ml (2 Tb) Freshly Chopped Parsley
15ml (1 Tb) Freshly Chopped Chives
30ml (2 Tb) Olive Oil
4 x 175g (6 oz) Pieces Cod Fillet, skinned

Start with the lentils: place them in a saucepan and cover with cold
water. Bring to the boil then simmer, covered, for 15 minutes until
just tender. Drain the lentils, reserving 150ml (1/4 pint) of the
cooking water.

In the same pan, heat the butter and cook the shallot and bacon
until the shallot are softened, then stir in the lentils, herbs,
tomato puree and reserved cooking liquid and bring to the boil. Season
to taste. Transfer to an ovenproof dish. Preheat the oven to
230C/450F/Gas Mark 8.

For the fish, combine all the ingredients except the cod to make a
crumb topping. Season generously. Press the crumb mixture evenly on
top of the pieces of cod and place the fish on top of the lentils.

Cook the fish towards the top of the oven for 20 minutes until the
flesh is opaque and the crumb crust is lightly golden. Serve at once
with baked tomatoes and mushrooms.

Preparation: 20 mins
Cooking: 35 mins
Calories/Fat per serving: 431cals/20g
Cost per serving: -L-1.55
