=====================
Hi Ruth,

->  RH> can't stand nail polish.

-> Amended tonight to a burgundy/black tie for the guys with dark trousers
-> & white shirt. The ladies were told dark skirt (same), black or white
-> top (final decision next week) and pearls. I've got a strand (one of 3)
-> that my maternal grandmother wore at her wedding in 1924; a strand of
-> pink, cream & gray ones Steve gave me for our 30th anniversary and some
-> blue ones with crystals he gave me last year for Christmas to chose
-> from. Probably will go with the old ones.

RH> If the string is OK, I would too. Cotton and silk get fragile with
RH> age and wear, so I'd be a little careful. I don't wear pearls much,
RH> but I do sell a lot of vintage jewelry. Some of those old 20s cords
 RH> snap at a dirty
 RH> look.

It was restrung when my mom inherited in 1974. At that time the triple
strand was was split into 3, one each for me and my sisters. I've not
worn mine too much since.

-> RH> Oddly enough, the gold stuff is what I have least of. My personal
-> RH> collecting jones is mid century copper.

-> Gold goes well with my coloring--dark blonde, brown eyes. Copper,
-> maybe, don't really have any pieces except a link bracelet Steve gave me
-> 35 years ago.

RH> I look better in silver than gold; I just happen to prefer the copper.
RH> They made funkier designs in it since the metal was cheaper.

I'll leave that to you then; I'm not into funky.

-> RH> As in it doesn't take much? I can read a fair bit and understand
->  RH> some, but I don't think I could string a grammatical sentence

-> I can pull together bits & pieces to make a decent sentence or ask a
-> vital question or two. When we visited friends in Alabama this spring,
-> they took us to a Mexican restaurant that had opened while they lived in
-> HI. Bob wanted to ask the waiter how long the place had been open but
-> didn't know how so I just asked "?Quantos an~nos aqui?" which worked.

RH> I could probably get that far, but that's about it. A cousin of my

There are a couple of other rather important questions I can ask.(G)

Anyway, this place had some pretty good food, even if it was the
standard stuff that most Mexican places serve. Rather unexpected in
rural Alabama, but you could say the same about the Chinese place whre
my folks live.

RH> mom's sent out Spanish Christmas cards this year for no known reason.
RH> I didn't have to resort to the translation on the back of the card.

Inexpensive or didn't know the wrong cards were picked up or just to be
contrary. One of the above 3 should fit.

-> RH> Oh nom,nom as the Icanhascheezeburger website would put it.

-> Every so often one of our friends in Savannah sends us some pictures
-> from that site--usually just the time I need a good laugh.

 RH> It's addictive - worse than chocolate. I've written literally 1000
 RH> captions so far.

I don't go there; I don't want to get sucked into something that has the
potential to take a lot of time I can best use elsewise.

-> Found out that a pub type place and nicer Italian place are going in up
-> there soon. The latter is expected to open sometime in February, the
-> pub, a few months later.

 RH> Sounds good.

Yes; we're going to make sure we give them a try. There are a few other
places in need to check out yet as well. Just not going out to eat that
often it seems.

-> RH> (cough) that I always wondered how it could make rent. Meanwhile a
-> RH> new, much smaller one opened a few doors down.

-> We aren't getting out and about that much right now. Still haven't been
-> to the big malls in Raleigh, probably won't now until January at the
-> earliest. Stores we do go to don't seem that crowded but you look and
-> see that all the buggies are gone...............unless they've not been
-> rounded up in a timely manner. I wouldn't want to start any kind of
-> retail business right now unless I knew it could make a go of itself,
-> and that's not a gven, by any means.

RH> It would depend on what it was, and where. I wouldn't want to open a
RH> restaurant right now, at least around here.

I can always make money sewing for others. Seems there's always a demand
there.

-> We had a high in the low 40s today. Last night (this morning) we got
-> down to at least 24 (don't know for sure, that's what it was when Steve
-> checked about 7:30). Had a frozen cold water pipe in the kitchen but it
-> thawed with no problems. I was able to make orange juice with the hot
-> water side and it was still cold water.

RH> It went down to about 20 here, maybe lower. The high today is in the
RH> 40s although it's not going to last. I'm not sure I've ever had a
RH> pipe freeze; New Englanders tend to keep our piping where that won't
RH> happen unless the power goes out for a few days.

I know, they're still learning how to build for cold weather in the
south. One place we lived at in Swansboro had no insulation in the
attic until we put some in. We've had a few warmish days but it's
supposed to chill off again starting tonight thru the week end.

Catch you later,
Ruth
