ML> Washington state to Washington DC, that sort of thing, with
ML> maybe 8 stops in between.
GJ> Hardly long-haul, but it would probably be appreciably faster than the
GJ> trains of the time. Have you any idea when that was, and how long it
 GJ> took?

ML> 1920s, and I have no idea how long it took. But the first
ML> international airmail was in 1919 between Vancouver and
ML> Seattle nonstop, run by Boeing (later UATC, later United).

You inspired me to look up Grolier, who said the first regularly
scheduled air mail service in the world began on 15th May 1918, New
York to Philadelphia to Washington DC. By 1924 air mails in USA were
going coast to coast in 32 hours, which was 3 days faster than the
trains could do it. I wonder how much faster USAn airmails are now?
(At the moment ours are slow, as the posties have gone on strike.)

GJ> Who was advertising the "no naughtiness" twin sleepers recently?
ML> Singapore has no-naughtiness flights; Virgin Atlantic has
 ML> naughtiness-encouraged flights.

Which is rather at variance with the airline's name.

ML> I paid pretty heavily for 1998 or whenever it was.
GJ> I think it was more recent than that, when you did your near-terminal
GJ> early morning dive down the stairs, fortunately after the toilet trip.

ML> My condition took a serious dive as soon as I quit eating my
ML> healthy diet and was confined to walking 2 mi/hr as opposed
ML> to the 4.something that I used to.

OK, so what (or who) was responsible for that? Sudden changes in life
style should be avoided.

 ML> The 330 and 340 compete with the 777 and 747.
ML> The 350 will compete with the 777 and 787.

ML> The 380 is porcinely large (sooee generous).

I dislike large aeroplanes, as it takes forever to get through Customs
and Immigration and to unload baggage. My favourite Air Niugini plane
was the "Pocket Rocket" - the F28 which flew from Port Moresby to
Cairns. Everything was quick with that little Fokker.

Just wondering.... after watching the TV news from airports all over
the Northern Hemisphere, which snow-bound one were you stuck in? :)
Temp here 37C (99F) today, and 42C (108F) forecast tomorrow.

Today I entertained some relatives of my SIL - a cousin and his
visiting father, who I had met previously in the Punjab and who had
been quite hospitable there. Vegetarian and non-drinkers, so a bit of
a problem. I finished up cooking an all-vegetable tagine, with some
vegetables that they were not all that familiar with, such as sweet
potato, pumpkin, carrots, shallots, but a chick-pea base and crushed
tomatoes. As I felt I was not up to making chapatis, I bought some
still-warm, very fresh Lebanese bread from the nearest Indian
supermarket, which was quite acceptable.

I did put a bit of chili in with the cinnamon, cumin, paprika,
turmeric and amchur, which brought papa to remember being surprised
that I and my family were quite happy with the chili level in the food
that he served us in Phagwara. I told him that I was used to Sumatran
chili levels, which were more extreme than Indian. He was surprised,
so I asked if he would like to try Indonesian. (That was when I was a
bit evil.) I produced an old jar of the "Extra Hot" Sambal Pemuda,
left over from your last visit, and offered it. I did point out that
when the Indonesians said Extra Hot, they meant it.

He took a heaped teaspoon of it, and mixed it in with his veggies. He
stopped talking for a while, and I noticed tears in his eyes. When he
could speak he said something in Punjabi to his son, who told him (in
English), that I had warned him! To give him credit, he did finish
all of that teaspoon of sambal.

The meal was served with cold water, and Berri grape-juice
(unfermented). Sweets were Iranian biscuits, grapes and cherries, and
I even made chai, with Twinings chai-bags, which was OK. All in all,
a most satisfactory meal.
