DD> Wheeee ... all three of your replies to Me, Weller and Clean Dave)
DD> that showed up at Holodeck showed up 9 times each. It's nothing on your
DD> end (or your uplink) because this one showed up just the once here at
 DD> FidoTel.

Oh, those poor people who had to face such a horror!

 GJ> In a 2-wheel drive car?

DD> Well, sure. You're either a driver or you're not. And four wheel drive
DD> is not any better on slick surfaces than two wheel drive. Worse in many

I can understand there would be little difference between the two with
regard to cornering ability, but hill climbing would be a different
matter. Most of my slick surface motoring has been on wet clay and
similar, where I found my old VW beetle, with its 17 inch wheels was
nearly as good as a 4-WD. On loose gravel it could slither over the
stones on its smooth underside if I had enough speed up.

GJ> I would have thought that the deep tread tyres as used on 4-WD
GJ> vehicles in Jim's neck of the woods would give a significant advantage
GJ> on snow and/or ice. The ways which humans have devised to enable them
GJ> to survive in hostile environments like Jim's are quite fascinating.

DD> Well, that would be right - in deep(ish) loose pack or powder snow or
DD> most mud/dirt. But, not right for ice or for water slicked roads. For
DD> slick roads, especially ice slick roads you need something like
DD> tungsten studs embedded in the tire(s) to dig into the ice and provide
DD> (some) traction. Or, since most legislatures have outlawed the studded
DD> doughnuts - ones which have broken/ground black walnut shells in the
DD> rubber - that will give some traction on
DD> ice but does not hurt the pavement beneath when the roads are dry. Of

I've never heard of that solution before. I have seen the crazy
Swedes ice racing on speedway bikes with spiky tyres, and wondered
what it would be like to be hit by a spinning wheel in a spill.

DD> course, there is always the old-time solution of dis-mountable chains
DD> which will get the job done but give you a pretty rough ride. But, the
DD> chains are a PITA to mount and dismount. And we do live in an
DD> increasingly convenience oriented world. Bv)=

When experimenting with methods of enhancing grip in muddy conditions
I found one of the best was to wrap large diameter rope around the
tyres in a spiral, threading it between the wheel spokes.

DD> None of those things will save your arse if you overcook that corner,
DD> though. As many have found to their everlasting pain and shame.

The same over-confident 4-WD owners who try to drive along flooded
roads in Queensland - and get out of their depth or washed off the
sides into deep water and have to be rescued by boat.

A few years ago I had the rare opportunity to introduce MLoo to one of
the old fruits I knew in my youth - loquat.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

 Categories:
      Yield: 4 Servings

           Loquats
