Marketing hype and a minimal resistance to hydro-planing in very wet weather.
And some advantage on unpacked snow ... but, not as much as the deeply open
treaded mud and snow tires. As with most compromises, they are outstanding at
nothing beyond lining the rubber company's pockets.

Ice is harder than rubber.

When the car is driven with a modicum of restraint. Unfortunately some people
think that ABS and "traction control" is a panacea for anything they wish to
attempt. Most do not realise how easy it is to overwhelm the minimal advantage
the ABS and traction control give - with predictable, and expensive results.

GJ> Hehe! Another fruit I haven't spied lately is the gooseberry.

Several things are called by that name. You probably mean something different
by it than the tart, pale green bush berry (Ribes hirtellum) with which I am
familiar. Gooseberries are derived mostly from two species: the European
gooseberry (Ribes grossularia), native to the Caucasus Mountains and North
Africa; and the American gooseberry (the aforementioned R. hirtellum), native
to northeastern and north-central United States (including the woods on my
Grandfather's farm) and adjacent parts of Canada. So-called European cultivars
are pure species, but virtually all so-called American cultivars also have
European genes.
