Hi Ruth,

->  RH> Add in a freight elevator and you've got a deal.

-> It's your house--talk to your mom about maybe puttng in a stairwell
-> lift. We've mentioned it to my parents but they don't want to, for

 RH> I don't need one ... yet, but I'd be willing to put heavier kitchen
 RH> equipment downstairs if we had one.

And the hold up is?........................Getting the power assist to
help you get the heavier stuff off the shelf and on to the lift, then
onto a counter or table top in the kitchen?

-> RH> I've known some guys who really should never have been allowed
 RH> within
->  RH> spitting distance of a stove.

-> And there are some gals that fit that description too. Neither of my
-> sisters really knew how to cook before leavig home.

 RH> My sister knows how; she just never has time to do it. My dad could
 RH> boil water, but that was about it.

My dad is a fair (but pedestrian) cook. His mom was bedridden a number
of years so he did some of the family meals when he was home. He
graduated from high school 10 years before she died but he wasn't home
all of the time--things like WWII, college, reserve duty, etc took up
some of that time.

-> I think the age limit is 42 now. But, you don't really want to live on
-> MREs and such like.

 RH> I've heard some aren't that bad. On the other hand, some ARE that
 RH> bad.

Yes but they've imroved dramatically from what they were origninally.
The 1991 Gulf War did a major depletion of the stockpile; new ones were
introduced based on the feed back of those who had to eat the first
ones. When we were in Frankfurt in the late 80s, Steve had a hard time
finding kosher ones for one of his soldiers.  That was one improvement;
the little bottle of hot sauce was another one.

-> RH> I think, if they're otherwise healthy. A guy in his 60s joined up
-> RH> (surgeon) when his son was killed in Iraq. He got in so he could

-> Medical yes, I think chaplains corps also.

 RH> That doesn't surprise me. Specialists with no combat requirement,
 RH> although in WWII some Chaplains did end up giving orders once in a
 RH> while. Parts of it were nuts, and a few times the chaplain was the
 RH> only officer left alive.

And the main job of the chaplain's assistant was/is to protect the
chaplain.

-> RH> steak, but on burgers (or in meat loaf apparently).

-> I guess so; I wouldn't buy it, especially in a full salt version. We do
-> very few burgers and meat loaf is usually 50/50 ground beef & turkey.

 RH> I think I got it for free. I'll buy it if the manufacturer and store
 RH> are paying for it.

I don't think I would buy it even if it were "free".

-> RH> be allergic to wool.

-> True on both accounts. You can control the shrinkage to some extent but
-> it's not a smart idea to work with wool if you're allergic to it.

 RH> I do it sometimes anyway, but it's not fun.

I do occaisionally with sewing stuff but most of the time I work with
cottons and such like.

-> RH> Awww. Sounds like a cuddle bum.

-> It was trying hard to be one. We had to turn it away tho.

 RH> Too bad. Then again a schmoozer like that will probably find another
 RH> susceptible human.

Probably so. A black cat was trying to get attention tonight when we
left out for school. It got some petting/head scratching from me. (G)

-> RH> Some Kosher ones use it; a lot of areas don't have that much
 RH> Certified
-> RH> food hanging around, so people have to adapt recipes.

-> Yes, a lot of improvisation has to be done in certain foods/areas. As
-> long as the basic laws can be satisfied, like using a vegetable gelatin
-> instead of an animal one in dairy recipes, it should be OK.

 RH> Ko-Jel is useful for vegetarians too.  Not for cheesecake of course;
 RH> gelatin cheesecakes aren't something most real kosher cooks will go
 RH> for.

Nothing like the real thing--except not after a meat meal. (G)

-> RH> I don't worry about those as much. Generally if the other two are
-> RH> high those things are in it too.

-> Yes but you have to red carefully on some stuff. Shopping in some
-> stores, you know everything is OK, others, you need to read the
-> ingredients list on just about everything.

 RH> People who keep Kosher here run into the same thing. If they shop the
 RH> local A&P (Waldbaum's) affiliate, they can buy the store brands and
 RH> not have to worry about it. For those avoiding the other stuff,
 RH> national brands and store brands can be dicey.

We don't have those so we're reading labels all the time.
