I'm not sure what the rules/law are with respect to fire hydrants, but
it is 48 hours for sidewalks -- even though technically they are not on
your property. My lot ends before the sidewalk starts.

DSac> One thing we do when a really huge storm blows in, though, is go out
DSac> and clear the walk and driveway every six hours or so regardless of
DSac> conditions - even if it means we can't tell that the driveway's been
DSac> done when we go inside [g]. It makes the plow berm much easier to

DSac> the storm makes it that much easier to clear as well.

What you say is good advice, and I have often done that. When I went
to bed, I think that we only had about 6-10 inches. It would have been
not a hard job to run the snowblower through that -- but I figured that
the neighbors might have objected to the noise in those wee hours of the
morning. By the time we got up, we had well over 24 inches. The final
Columbia official total was 33.8 inches.

DSac> Also, I can get out of my driveway with my little Nissan 4x4 with up
DSac> to about 18 inches of snow on the street, but I'd be stranded like
DSac> everyone else if I waited until all 30 inches had fallen.

The only problem with doing that is that the car really compacts the
snow and makes it hard to get rid of it later.

DSac> Did Columbia have snow plows running through the storm? Enfield has
DSac> quite a fleet, and they hit our street every 6 or 7 hours during the
DSac> storm and within an hour or two of the last flake. I think it helps
DSac> that one of the DPW guys lives at the end of my street. :)

The county had snow plows running throughout the night, with priority on
the main roads. Our street (Hesperus) is secondary, and the side
streets off of that come even later. The state does the state highways,
with their first priority was on things like Interstate 95. By noon,
Hesperus was at least partially plowed. The side streets, such as the
one going up the hill from our house, get plowed later.

Before Gail's father retired and moved to Florida, he was in charge of
maintenance for the city of Milwaukee, WI. Summer was repairing roads,
winter was snow removal. Her street was usually one of the first
streets plowed:-}}

This soup looks decent, but why on earth does it have bouillabaisse in
the title?

 Categories: Soup, Stew
      Yield: 2 Servings

           Finely ch
3/4 lb New potatoes -- scrubbed or
           Peeled a
    1/4 ts Saffron
        ds Tabasco sauce
           Salt and freshly ground
           Black pepper
10 oz Frozen chopped spinach, --

    1/4 c Grated imported Parmesan
           Cheese
1 Triangle of bread fried in
           Butter per pers

In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and
garlic and cook until they are soft, about 4 minutes. Add the potatoes
and let them cook a minute on each side without browning. Transfer to
an ovenproof casserole. Add 2 cups boiling water, the saffron, Tabasco
sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir the spinach into the
casserole, being careful not to break the potato slices. Add the
bouquet garni and lemon peel. Cover and allow to simmer until the
potatoes are cooked, about 40 minutes. When ready to serve, break 1
egg per person into the pan, sprinkle with the Parmesan, and cook
gently over low heat or in a 350 degree F. oven until the egg whites
are set, about 3 minutes on a burner or 5 minutes in the oven. Serve
in flat bowls, with an egg in each serving, and garnish with toast
  points.
