Ärende: getting to no 828
=========================
Hi Michael,

ML> Fewer and fewer, with the dwindling of the Classical audience.
RH> I'm reading that everywhere it seems. The orchestra in Raleigh cut out
RH> some concerts, another one, the guest artist waived his fee. Even
RH> before we left HI in 2006, the Honolulu symphony was cutting back on
RH> the number of concerts they were doing.

ML> The state of the arts is pretty dire. The orchestra in Honolulu
ML> is back playing, if not comfortably: for a while it wasn't even
ML> performing. As far as guest artists waiving fees, that's bad for
ML> future guest artists; better I think to give the money to the
ML> musicians' pension fund, where it's locked away and not subject
ML> to use for current operating expenses.

I'm not sure how they worked things out. He was supposed to appear with
another guy but the other one backed out. Instead, his (first guy's)
wife came with him, a classical musicial in her own right. News &
Observer critic gave it a pretty good review.

RH> Our big trip last year (into this one) was the one to Israel.

ML> And a good one it was, sounds like, and worthwhile from the knowledge
 ML> standpoint as well. My Jewish friends have been leaning on me to go;
ML> I have enough miles to get me there; just waiting for enough hotel
ML> points to accumulate so that I don't take yet another big hit. Also,

I understand that. It's a very interesting place to visit. I'm glad we
had a guide for this trip but I'd like to get over there again, either
on our own or with connections that we can explore more on our own.

ML> I've got to figure out the passport situation - I'd want an Israel
ML> trip to be after a Singapore/Indonesia/Malaysia one so as to be the
ML> last thing on the passport before it goes away (2011). Otherwise an
ML> Israel stamp might make it tough for me to make my usual visits to
ML> those Muslim countries (which, even though they tend to tolerate
ML> alcohol, don't do well by Israel and Jews).

For sure! One young man on our trip had been in the military, deployed
to A............... before going to seminary & then the trip. He was
detained for further questioning when we got there. Another, older
man, had a very common name so he was pulled over for more questioning
when we got there. His wife wasn't happy but once she saw the support
we gave her, she felt better, then quite relieved when he was allowed to
rejoin the group.

ML> retiring after the July 4 concert). Still way, way behind,
RH> Going thru the cannons and fireworks one last time?

 ML> Pretty much.

And, Steve says that we could go up to the Boston area to help you
celebrate. (G) Did you say that Toscanini's (the ice cream place) is
still in business? Is Legal Seafood all it's hyped to be?

ML> Noodles with honey and poppy seeds
 ML> cat: Jewish, milch
 ML> serves: 6 to 8

ML> Cook first four ingredients together for 5 min. Stir in noodles.
 ML> Serve hot.

Easy, and looks good. Wonder how soy milk would work in it.

-> So we'll each carry on the way we feel is best.
HN> Well, I sorta stumble around blindly at
 HN> times (grin)
RH> Be careful of doing it in the kitchen tho. You may grab the cayenne
RH> pepper instead of the paprika for the chicken you're going to roast.

ML> Sounds fine with me. Perhaps not so good for Annie, though.

As I told Hap, I'd probably go for a mix so it wouldn't be too spicy or
too mild. We've done chicken quite often a way we found in Germany and
Switzerland that's simple but good (but not for those on a sodium
restriced diet). Basically, wash off the chicken, pat it slightly dry,
sprinkle (heavily) with salt & paprika. Let it sit for a few minutes,
then grill or roast.

Catch you later,
Ruth
