-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> people I know who work in China say that life there is now much more
GJ> humane and prosperous than during the days of the Chairman.

ML> For the middle and upper classes. But there's still the disturbing

They are the ones buying cars and taking holidays in Australia. I
would expect the extra money they generate from selling stuff to the
EU and USA would filter down to improve the life style of the
peasants, like has happened with Japan.

ML> devaluation of human life that has always been a downside of
ML> Chinese culture - as well as the attempted destruction of real
 ML> individuality of thought.

There is the "plenty more peasants where they came from" attitude,
which exists to some extent in other countries with huge populations,
such as India, Russia and Indonesia. Individual thinkers are resented
by governments everywhere.

ML> Might as well drink beer, which is better there.
GJ> The alcohol content is variable, and the late fermentation red Sturm
GJ> is not too sweet, and can be quite pleasant as a drink, if not
 GJ> considered as a wine.

ML> "If not considered as a wine." Say no more!

(G) But then I think you don't like babies much?

GJ> Hmmm. I suppose the controller's controllers would have looked at the
GJ> "what if" case of an emergency like a dead-stick landing occurring
GJ> while there was a small child distracting personnel.

ML> How many seconds would it take to get the kid off the mike?
ML> Ten? Not much is going to happen - at least in the universe
ML> of things where an ATC is going to make a difference - in a
ML> few seconds. I'm sure that the controller in question was
ML> keeping an eye on things.

I agree with you, but for the authorities, "Rules is rules!". "Let
them get away with that, and the next thing you know pilots will let
their young sons into the flight decks to try flying the planes."

ML> The worse issue is that the main runway is closed for maintenance
 ML> until July.
ML> Lengthening and widening, mostly for the 380 I think.

That would explain it.

GJ> itinerary has us spending 2220 on 2nd June until 1200 on the 3rd at de
GJ> Gaulle, Aerogare 1. As I have never done time in a French airport,
GJ> what do you suggest we do with that period? We will also spend 0635
GJ> to 2150 at Kuala Lumpur, but hopefully that will be enough time to
GJ> make a quick visit to the city.

ML> 1. Try not to commit suicide at CDG, though that alternative
ML> may tempt you when you see the airport. You might want to take
ML> the RER someplace - the last train is at 2358, and you could
ML> carouse in Paris until morning.

CDG is that bad, huh? :( I will tell Leonore. As for carousing, that
could depend on how we mis-spend time in Krakow and Warsaw.

ML> 2. KL is a good food town - I have had the best tapas and the best
ML> durian I've ever experienced within a mile or two of each other.
ML> There are numerous ways of getting to the city from the airport.
ML> www.toandfromtheairport.com is a good resource (not just for KL).

I have enjoyed good food in KL, but that was 40 years ago. I will
investigate transport, but I would expect there would be some sort of
shuttle bus or a "City tour" like Singapore does.

 ML> Title: Cinnamon-Spiced Tea
 ML> Categories: Thai, Beverages

That should result in something very like N. Indian chai. Out of
curiosity, I might try it. I like chai.
