GJ> study. Now that China is richer, and its people are getting a better
GJ> education, it has now become the top source country for skilled and
GJ> business migrants to Australia. The old, "White Australia"
GJ> politicians must be spinning in their graves!

ML> Sort of what happened here a couple generations earlier. The
ML> question is why the East Asians did so well as a group, and I
ML> suppose the answer is that the ones who had the persistence,
ML> initiative, and savvy to succeed in an unfamiliar environment
ML> are the same ones who had the persistence, initiative, and
ML> savvy to leave the old country in the first place.

That philosophy applies equally to most large migrant groups, and
explains the rapid social and technological advances made by the first
European settlers in North America. Australia has followed a similar
pattern. What will be particularly interesting is how later major
migrations of different ethnicity will affect the social network of
those two countries. It has been suggested that USA will become a
primarily Spanish speaking country in 40 years or so, but I don't
believe that. Even in countries such as the Philippines, where the
English language was not introduced until the beginning of the 20th
century, it has become the main language of education, and is
increasing in general use. Similarly, in Australia, English is the
language used by the migrants from Africa to talk to the Chinese
shopkeepers and Indian taxi drivers.

GJ> You would know more airline/control tower people than me.

ML> Indeed. The airline people I know to say hi to number in the
ML> low triple digits; the ones I actually interact with in more
ML> than a customerly way number in the low double digits; and
ML> control tower people I know to say hi to number in the single
ML> digits. I only actually interact with one control tower guy, and
ML> that's only because I periodically dine with him and his wife.

So what does he think of "the case of the child in the tower"?

GJ> So far, Los Angeles and Port Moresby are the worst I have experienced.

ML> The only difference between these is that at the former you are
ML> still likely to be served your head on a platter.

Pt Moresby was the only place where I had read of a passenger
describing a shoot-out between the cops and a baddy, until a similar
fatal happening occurred in the Sydney airport a year or so ago.

GJ> Of the above, I have been to La Guardia and O'Hare (which had the most
GJ> incompetent Controller I have heard on Channel 9), but not the others.

ML> The worst one I heard was at LAX - after he called on a Delta flight
ML> to slow to a certain speed, the pilot said, rather languidly I thought
ML> considering the seriousness of the issue, "if we did that we'd fall
 ML> out of the sky."

My mistake; it was LAX where the controller held up the plane I was in
for a couple of hours until the pilot could get permission to briefly
cross the Canadian border to go around a storm. As result, I missed
my connecting flight in O'Hare, and had to pay for my own overnight
accommodation there. The female controller was very rude in her tone
and language when speaking to the pilot. It was obvious that she knew
she could get away with rudeness to the pilot, but he could not be
rude back. He was quite restrained, although apparently speaking
through clenched teeth. O'Hare was where planes had to queue up for
such a long time that some had to temporarily leave the queue to get
more fuel. What a waste! Other pilots just switched off their
engines while waiting.

ML> I enjoy Hong Kong quite a lot. Bear in mind that the Regal Hotel
ML> that is attached to the terminal has (or at least did 5 years ago)
ML> a genius dim sum chef.

Just don't go down to the basement area, where JetstarAsia and other
low-cost airlines have their departure prisons.
