Well, there has been a sizable body of data in the first of those
two countries, if you call the United States "North America." The
common wisdom is that the voluntary migrations (wrong word, but
there isn't a better) have produced better citizens than the
forced ones (but in a sense, most are forced).

   It has been suggested that USA will become a
 GJ> primarily Spanish speaking country in 40 years or so, but I don't
 GJ> believe that.  Even in countries such as the Philippines, where the
 GJ> English language was not introduced until the beginning of the 20th
 GJ> century, it has become the main language of education, and is

Good point, but in such countries English has been the language of
privilege, thus something to be aspired to. In the US, egalitarian
forces have attempted with some success to undermine the economic
and social primacy of English and to offer legitimacy to Spanish
and other immigrant languages - with the result that English is no
longer a prerequisite for advancement, and the US has become less
a melting pot than in the past couple centuries - it's more a
collection of enclaves, something that I think is doomed to long-term
failure. Whether the failure of the model leads to the failure of
the country is anyone's guess.

The subject hasn't come up, because it was a nonevent. The
professionals don't even consider it an incident worthy of
discussion.

Odd ... what was the flag of this carrier? The Canadians are
pretty good about allowing craft to cross into their airspace.
I do it probably a dozen times a year, as a lot of the routes
out of Boston go farther north than the great circle path,
because of wind patterns.

Edited to add that as United is the only Ch9-offering airline,
this must have been on UA, which is strange, as literally
hundreds of its flights cross that quite permeable border
every day. Curiouser and curiouser.

There are reasons why I fly in the manner and on the
carriers that I do.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.01

      Title: San Antonio Spinach Salad
 Categories: Salads, Cyberealm, Mexican
      Yield: 4 servings

      4 c  Packed torn spinach leaves
      1    Can (15 oz) black beans,
           Rinsed and drained
      1    Red bell pepper into stirps
    1/2 c  Thin sliced red onion, rings
      1 c  Sliced mushrooms
    1/4 c  Canadian bacon, strips
    1/2 c  Pace Picante Sauce
    1/4 c  Bottled Italian dressing
    1/4 ts Ground cumin
           Hard-cooked eggs, cut into
           Wedges or sliced (optional)

  Combine vegetables, beans and bacon in large bowl.  Combine Pace
  Picante Sauce, dressing and cumin in small bowl; mix well.  Pour Pace
  Picante Sauce mixture over vegetables; toss lightly to coat with
  dressing. Chill. Toss again and garnish with eggs, if desired. Serve
  with additional Pace Picante Sauce.  Makes about 7 1/2 cups of salad.
