-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Perhaps the Japanese increased their country's prosperity by just
 GJ> working harder and better?

ML> That has nothing to do with the trickle-down theory.

Which is still being espoused by some people. The point is that China
is becoming richer, with more people with surplus disposable income
prepared and permitted to spend it on domestic luxuries and overseas
travel to Australia. Have you found that over recent years there is
an increasing number visitors from China to USA, in spite of their
unfavourable exchange rate?

GJ> This seems to be how other countries have done it.
ML> If you believe the history written by the successful ones!

And your explanation is?

GJ> Having eaten some excellent goat in Monterrey, the thought of Taco
GJ> Bell, with French Fries replacing it is very depressing.
ML> I had my first sangria in Monterrey. Forget what I ate.

Probably roast cabrito, which is something of a speciality of the
region. The first sangria I remember was in Darwin.

GJ> How far does a baseballer have to scamper to score a run? It is only

ML> Let's see if I can answer that. 120 yards, with 3 bases
ML> (intermediate stopping points). He gets one for reaching
ML> home (the origin and destination of his diamond-shaped run).

Does he get any awards if he stops at the intermediate points? Apart
from when he misses the ball completely and it is caught by the
catcher, how does he get out? Do the fielders throw the ball at him?
(My ignorance of your national game is regrettably immense.)

ML> If the ball clears the fence without bouncing,* the only
ML> additional reward is leave to circle (more properly
ML> diamond-shape) the bases at leisure (the "home run trot").

What happens to the ball? If it is caught by one of the audience is
he allowed to keep it?

ML> Baseball has 9 innings, rather than one or two, each being
ML> marked by 3 outs, which are similar to outs in cricket. A
ML> Google search reveals that the most runs scored in an
ML> inning at the major league level is 18. Bear in mind that
ML> the average per game is about 10, or 1.1 per inning, total
 ML> for both teams.

Perhaps I need to Google baseball, as it sounds more complicated than
I had thought after just watching it.

=====

ML> I'd rather stay in Denpasar, myself.

ML> You truncated that reply of mine. My ratherness of staying in
ML> Denpasar relates to CDG, not Vienna, though I didn't like
 ML> VIE airport itself.

OK, I got it this time. Although it is small, VIE does have a nice
bar, and the train station is close. Better than Denpasar.

GJ> I see that from the end of 2010 Air New Zealand will be introducing on
GJ> some long-haul flights, economy class bed seats - the "Skycouch" -
GJ> designed for couples, combining a row of 3 flat-surface seats, for the
 GJ> price of 2 1/2 economy seats.

ML> The width of 3 economy seats wouldn't let even me
ML> stretch out (though you might do fine).

It would be interesting to read passengers' comments, once Air NZ
starts using the Skycouch.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Cabrito Al Pastor (Broiled Kid)
 Categories: Mexican, Meats
      Yield: 8 Servings

      2 Kids [baby goats], 6 1/2 to
           -8 1/2 lbs each
      3 tb Salt
      1 c Mild vinegar
           For the garnish:
      3 tb Cilantro, finely chopped
      3 tb Chiles serranos, finely
           -chopped
      1 Recipe Frijoles de Olla,
           -mashed (recipe
           Separately)
      2 c Guacamole (recipe
  1 1/2 c Mozzarella OR Monterey
           Jack
           -separately)
      3 tb White onion, chopped
      1 c Tomato, finely chopped
           -cheese, freshly grated
     16 Totopos (crisply fried
           -tortilla wedges)

  From Nuevo Leon.

  For the kid:

Put kids in a large stockpot, and cover with water. Add salt and
vinegar. Set aside for 2 hours. Meanwhile, build a pile of mesquite
wood on the ground, and burn down to white coals. Remove kids from
water and thread on spits. Arrange over the hot coals, and roast for
2 to 3 hours, depending on the kids' weight, basting occasionally
with a little salted water. Turn spits continuously so that the meat
cooks evenly, or use a rotisserie. Add more white coals if necessary.

To serve, cut kid in pieces, and place on plates. Garnish with
guacamole, onion, tomato, cilatro, and chiles. Serve with Frijoles
de Olla sprinkled with cheese, totopos, and Pico de Gallo sauce. The
kid may be shredded and used in fried tacos.

  Makes 8 servings.
