I've gotten modern gold that cheaply once in a while, but not the old
stuff.  Victorian gold shows up cheap once in a while, because a lot of
American gold isn't hallmarked.

Definitely.  Old pre-WWII coffee cans, medicine bottles, spice tins, etc
can be real money when you put them together.  The same for 1930s kitchen
utensils, if you hit the right ones.
